I have been cleaning up my step dad's laptop for him. I noticed that his NOD anti-virus had not updated for 2 months due to an invalid username/password. I also noticed he had no other protection at all.
The first thing I downloaded was spyware blaster and AVG anti-virus free to give him some protection.
I then downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy. This found 42 infections! (Trojans, adware, diallers).
Due to this I downloaded various other software to find any other problems:

AVG Anti-spyware - 9 infections
Super Anti-spyware - 4 infections
Bit Defender - 24 infections
Arovax anti-spyware - 5 infections
eTrust - 6 infections
Emco Malware Destroyer - 13 infections
Spycatcher - 9 infections
Ad-aware - 2 infections
McAfee Avert Stinger - 0 infections

I also used Panda Anti-rootkit and Sophos anti-rootkit but these found nothing.

I then used Trend-Micro Housecall online scanner which found 4 problems. One of these problems was concerning a security hole, and Trend-micro provided me with the following link to fix the problem manually:
Mcrosoft security

However, this laptop has XP SP2, not XP SP1, and I don't think it has any of the other of the programs in the list.

Since removing all the spyware found with the various removers, the laptop has become much slower rather than faster! It keeps freezing and programs take a while to load, whereas it was really fast before
It got faster at first and then began to slow down considerably, I think around the time that I installed and used spycatcher. I have since deleted most of the software but could these installations have caused the slow-down, or do I have more infections on the laptop?

Also, while I was writing this, 2 Windows Media Player opened by theirself. Also, the screen went black for a few seconds (I thought it had rebooted).

Hope you can help! Here is my hijack this log:

Hi,

Just some leftovers in your log...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

Since removing all the spyware found with the various removers, the laptop has become much slower rather than faster! It keeps freezing and programs take a while to load, whereas it was really fast before

And as you already said as well - you have been installing several Scanners and that's the cause. I see parts of Norton present, Bitdefender, AVG Antivirus..
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.

Also, I see a lot of other realtime Spywarescanners running in the background. Teatimer, Adaware, AVG Antispyware. Please don't overload your startup with all different scanners.

Thanks for your reply. I deleted the entries (although one was no longer there).

I don't have Norton on the laptop. I did a while ago so some registry entries must have remained. I have used a registry cleaner to remove these.
I also no longer have Bit Defender installed.

I only use the Windows firewall, another firewall show up on the log?

Also, I don't have the real-time component of Ad-aware as it is the free one. I have disabled Tea Timer and just left AVG Anti-spyware real-time running, but there is no change in system performance.

I have followed the suggestions in the link you gave me, although I had already prevented unnecessary programs from running at startup and defragmented. There has been no significant change in system performance.
I don't understand, it was fast BEFORE I cleaned all the spyware off it!

Thanks again for your help. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi,

Let's have a better look if there's any malware lurking there before I ask you to test to temporary uninstall AVG Antivirus and Antispyware... Because I know on some systems it just won't run properly and that may explain the slowdown...

But do next first..

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
In case you already used Combofix previously, please delete the version you are having and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Extra note..

I have used a registry cleaner to remove these.

I do not recommend Registry Cleaners. This because some may rather damage than cleaning/fixing your registry.
Only use it if you have basic knowledge about the registry and know if a certain key/value is safe to be removed or not. Cleaning the registry won't really improve system performance anyway even though there are a lot of orphaned keys. If registry cleaning was really required, then Microsoft would have added this option in Windows already imho.
So use at your own risk. After all, a corrupted registry is a corrupted Windows.

You may also want to read this thread why Registry Cleaners are not recommended.
