I have followed the instructions for removal of a Virtumonde infection with no success after several attempts. I thought I had it removed back in July and it came back or I didn't really have it removed. I may have gotten re-infected as well depending on where it's being picked up.

I run Spybot, Ad Aware, McAfee, and Windows Defender on this computer. I have run several online scanners as well. I do keep up with automatic Microsoft updates and run weekly scans with the programs mentioned.

I am attaching a log from Windows Defender (manually created), Hijackthis, VirtumundoBeGone, and Vundofix. I captured a program called mvc.exe that I was unable to upload that seems to correspond to the re-occurrence, but I am not 100% sure.

I have not been able to locate the launching program that keeps restoring the files after all the removal processes. I have manually removed all the copies of the dll, bak, ini files that show up on the system in windows\system32 and they will return within 2 hours typically.

Hello cmuss,

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply. DO NOT attach any of the log files, as it makes it harder to read.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

As requested I downloaded and ran combo fix. The combofix.tx file was not produced. I did see a message indicating a file could not be accessed as it was locked by another process. There was an avenger.txt file with the following results.

Logfile of The Avenger version 1, by Swandog46
Running from registry key:
\Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vkquwexg

*******************

Script file located at: \??\C:\ComboFix\ComboDel.txt

Beginning to process script file:

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomjjii.dll not found!
Deletion of file C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomjjii.dll failed!

Could not process line:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomjjii.dll

Completed script processing.

Finished! Terminate.

I tried launching Hijackthis and it hug, so I rebooted. Upon reboot I received an LSASS program error. The requested operation failed and the computer rebooted within 30 seconds. I rebooted with the Last Known Good Configuration which allowed the system to start. I ran Hijackthis with the following results.

Thanks for the help.

Hi cmuss,

Download SUPERantispyware
  • Load SUPERantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log to this thread along with a fresh Hijackthis log.

I didn't find a log file for SuperAntiSpyware, so I will list what was found on subsequent runs.

During the first run,

Adware.eZula
Adware.Tracking Cookie
Adware.Veundo Variant/Resident
Browser Hijacker.Apropos Media/PeopleOnPage
Trojan.AIMBot-WMO/SS
Trojan.Downloader-Gen/HitItQuitIt
Trojan.Winfixer
Unclassified.Unknown Origin

After the secon run,

Adware.eZula
Trojan.AIMBot-WMO/SS
Trojan.Downloader-Gen/HitItQuitIt

After the third run,

Adware.Tracking Cookie

I had restored Documents and Settings for all users on the computer between the second and third run.

I had run ComboFix twice as well and each time it completed successfully.

The first run was

ComboFix 07-09-21.2 - "Charlie" 2007-09-23 12:34:36.2 - NTFSx86

I had also run VundoBeGone again after the first ComboFix seemed to not have cleared the problem. The results were overwritten when I restored the user accounts, but it did help move the process along.

I had also reviewed the earlier logs and found that the was a hidden task in the tasks folder. I went and found a task sa.dat. It took several attempts, but I think I finally have it deleted. It was named differently in the earlier logs.

I am including the latest Hijackthis.Log file

I has taken most of the day to get to this point. Nothing new is coming up when I run SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, AdAware, or McAfee. I have incorporated all the latest software updates from the date of the backup, so I think I'm current at this point. MSDefender actually caught a portion of the Vundo infection as well and was able to help in the process. Nothing new has come up since the earlier runs of SuperAntiSpyware.

I'm not sure I'm in the clear yet, which is the reason for all the information above. I did see that there are winlogon registry entries pointing to missing files. I'll have to see if I can get those deleted. I will continue to monitor for new activity.

Thanks for the assistance and suggestions.

Hi cmuss,

Is this your computer? Or is it used by a family?

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\iiffgfe]

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

It's a family computer.

I've removed Viewpoint at least once already. I'll do it again.

As far as I know I have Java 6.0.2 installed, but I'm having problems as it seems to have installation problems and is not running correctly. I'm working that as well.

As far as the other items, I'll look at those over the next couple of days. I'll post the results.

So far, I've run SuperAntiSpyware several times with nothing other than cookies showing up.

Thanks for the update.

I completed running the script and getting Java 6.0.2 successfully installed this morning. I ran Combofix and no log file was produced. I had manually deleted one of the entries in the registry earlier, so I went in and manually deleted the other registry entry as well. I also uninstalled and removed viewpoint.

I ran Combofix and no log file was produced.

Did you run it using CFScript? That removes the registry entrys.

The log is at C:\ComboFix.txt. Please post it.

I had manually deleted one of the entries in the registry earlier, so I went in and manually deleted the other registry entry as well.

It should have removed the registry entrys if your ran CFScript.
Sounds like you did not run Combofix with CFScript or Combfix failed. Either way I need to see the Combfix log.

Since your are manually deleting registry entries yourself, I can no longer be help responsible for this computer. :flowers:
Fixing registry entrys without proper supervision can lead to your computer not booting or programs not working. Did you make a regisry backup before you messed with the registry?

I followed the instructions in your post. I watched combofix create a restore point and backup the registry. I waited a few minutes and there was no activity so I assumed it completed. I looked in C:\ for the log file and found nothing. I assumed it did it's job and quit, but it must have failed during the process.

I decided to try again this evening. The log is attached.

I noticed that one of my kids had used the computer this afternoon, so there was also a quarantine file produced with some files. I'll need to look into where they had gone.

This is the contents of the quarantine file

I waited a few minutes and there was no activity so I assumed it completed. I looked in C:\ for the log file and found nothing. I assumed it did it's job and quit, but it must have failed during the process.

No, it did not fail, you must have gotten out before it completed. There would be an error message if it failed. It can take as long as 15 minutes to complete.
The C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt is from the previous run, as your current ComboFix log shows that nothing was deleted.

Your Hijackthis log looks clean as does the ComboFix log.

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
