Hello everyone, im brand new to the site to please bare with me......

I've tried everything that your forum tells me to do before posting on this site but none of it seems to work, ive used used spybot, avg, window washer, adaware SE and still the popups keep appearing. So, now it comes to this. I NEED HELP! I get popups (they open in IE when im running firefox) about every thirty seconds when i have an internet page open.

the main problem started with cpvfeed.com, i think, then more pop ups just kept appearing. I'm really confused by the entire thing. My computer is only ever used by me so noone else in my family could have used it.. I have a hijackthis log as well, but I can't find anything on there that is relative (hopefully you guys will). I have some computer experience, but I have never come across anything this confusing to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, Stinger (which I just dl'ed) says the comp is clean, as does all of the other various spyware, adware and virus detectors that I have.

below is my hijackthis log. hope you can help me with this problem. look foward to your reply soon.

thanks in advance for your help

Hello and welcome aboard

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

---------

If you do want to clean this up,

Please download Combofix to your desktop:
  • Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Hi there, stranger!

Save it as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

-------

Please run BitDefender Online Scanner:
  • Read the terms and then click I Agree
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the BitDefender ActiveX control, If you do, please allow it to install.
  • On the Scanning Options screen, hit Click Here To Scan and then follow the on screen prompts.
  • Once BitDefender is finished scanning your computer it will automatically remove the infections.
  • Once the removal process is finished click the Close button and a dialog box will appear asking if you want to send your scan log back to the makers of BitDefender.
  • You do not have to do this but what you do want to do is press the button that says View Log and copy & paste that logs contents here, along with the ComboFix raport aswell as a fresh HijackThis log. :flowers:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. They should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
------

Run a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = prosearching.com

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Close ALL other open windows but HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

How's the system running?

i have followed all your instructions and hopefully my system is now clean of all them crap pop-ups!!!! i know you didnt ask but i have posted a new log from the hijackthis after the removal of the checked files that you stated.

can you confirm that the virus is now removed from my system or is there still some things that i need to do???

also my system seems to be rebooting and running a lot faster than before.

No malware that I can see in your latest logs, but one thing.

Do you have an active Symantec application running? Norton?
If there's no Symantec products running, then there's one leftover service running, and probably couple of folders left.

Have you uninstalled them all?

Let me know.

Please read here how to clear old restore points and create a new one.

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. It also has immunization and realtime protection included.
Prevention Programs:
  • Comodo BOClean <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known adsites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Other necessary Programs:
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio Personal Firewall and ZoneLabs. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Hi there, stranger!
