Ie, Msn Messenger, Outlook Express & Firefox All Fubar!

Suddenly I cannot run or use Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, MSN Messenger (or whatever the hell it's called now) or Firefox. I can open Outlook Express but it cannot send or receive emails and just tries forever. IE won't load ANYTHING, neither will Firefox. I can use Flock to access the internet. McAfee is telling me I'm not protected and when I click on fix it tells me it can't because of an error. I'm also getting "end program - O" error messages when I reboot. (Let's see I'm running Windows XP and thought I had all the latest versions of the afforementioned programs)

I have been searching the net for days trying to find out what this is. I've seen people post about one issue but never all of them. I'm terrified to try a fix on one thing because they all seem related. Can someone point me in the right direction? Do I need to just try to back up all my data and take this to a professional?? (I don't know if I can afford to do this :thumbsup: ) Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a few options I PERSONALLY would try as I have a limited amount of patience and it sounds like you do too.

1. Reinstall Internet Explorer, MS outlook express, Firefox, McAfee.

2. Try switching to ZoneAlarm free or another firewaill, to see if McAfee is the problem, if not, put McAfee back on I guess.

3. If your system automatically creates restore points (which in XP it should, as my XP machine does), restore back to before this all started happening.

Since Flock works, and it's a derivation of Mozilla and it's Gecko insides, Firefox shouldn't be having a problem. What I'm getting is that when you click the icon to open IE or FF, NOTHING at all happens? Does a window open up and not display a page because it cannot connect? What are the details of this?

(And btw, we are professionals. :flowers: :thumbsup: )

Since this happened suddenly, you can try using System Restore or System Restore from a command prompt in "SAFE MODE" to return to a previous state before your problems began.

I'll be honest and tell you that I don't recall what order I did these things in because I've been trying to deal with this while also chasing after a very active toddler so my brain is a bit fried.

I did try a system restore to no avail. I probably didn't go back far enough but now it's actually been a couple of weeks since this started. :thumbsup: I got so frustrated that I gave up and just resorted to using Flock to check my email online and to surf. :flowers: But being cut off from chat sucks since it's how I keep in touch with family.

I'm trying to remember what order things happened on the day in question. As I recall the first thing I noticed was that MSN Messenger died. It just inexplicibly lost connectivity and could not log in. Then I noticed that Outlook Express was stuck in a loop trying and failing to send/receive. I tried to open IE and it launched but then couldn't connect to any websites, all I got were "page not found" errors. So I thought my broadband was down. It wasn't because my husband's computer (a MAC) is just fine in terms of accessing the internet etc. Then I tried Firefox and it had the same issue as IE, it will launch but it cannot find the internet. I tried Flock and was able to start Googling. I wasn't finding much. So I thought, ok, I'll reload programs. I used Flock to download new versions of IE, MSN Messenger and Outlook Express. I updated McAfee too. Nothing helped. I'll be honest I didn't even try Firefox. It was several days later that McAfee finally started giving me the icon that says "your computer is not protected" and then telling me that it can't be fixed because of an error. Within the last few days is when it started throwing the "end program - O" when I reboot.

Does this sound like I'm infected with something? I was sure I'd picked up some nasty bug or worm and that's why I was so surprised that all my Googling wasn't coming up with hits. I've never had anything happen on my computer that I couldn't fix myself (well, other than a harddrive failure that was hardware, not software)

Since a few days ago (Oct 23-ish), I have a similar problem. IE and Outlook Express just hang in the connect process with no message, and give "Not Responding" on close. However, I can connect through Network Connections panel successfully and then Outlook and IE work as normal. So more of an irritant than a show stopper.
Firefox has never connected by itself, I always have to connect first (normally by opening Outlook).
I am not aware of having made any changes, apart from the normal Microsoft automatic updates.
I use Windows XP firewall, and neither Windows Defender or AVG virus scan show anything abnormal.

I have tried resetting various settings and passwords in IE and Outlook definitions, but to no avail.

I am interested to know if this is widespread and, more importantly, if anyone knows of a fix.

If you have a problem you would like to discuss, please start your own topic.
This will help to avoid the confusion, of trying to help two or more people, in the same thread, with different problems.
Even if your problem is similar to the original poster's problem, the solution could be totally different due to different hardware, software, system requirements, etc....
