Hi there, I have had a problem with my internet connection for as long as i can remember. Basically, whilst using the internet for games and browsing, the little Monitor (bottom right) goes black and the connection is lost or refreshes. The connection takes about 30 seconds to return back to normal. This seems to happen regularly at times and not at all at other times (no loss of connection). it seems to possible happen when more that 2 computers are using the internet and or running azeurus.

The adware problem only started recently, i run adaware se and spybot which removes it but it bery quickly comes back. Basically when i click on a link it takes about 7 seconds and gets re-routed to a crappy site, changes every time.

I hope that someone can help me out.

I have a Bullfrog AirStation WYR-G54 router and virgin media broadband.

Many Thanks

Hello,

You're dealing with several different types of malware, so perform next steps in the right order...

* Please download FixwareOut from the following site:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
Then we'll do the rest...
AntispywareScanners---Antivirus Scanners---Firewalls---Online Scanners---Prevention---Help! My computer is slow---My Blog---Follow me on Twitter.
My help is ALWAYS FREE, but if you want to donate to help me continue my fight against malware -- click here!
Asking for help via Private Message or Mail will be ignored - So If you need help, post your problem in the forum.

Hi,

No need to post a HijackThis startuplist log - the normal HijackThislog is OK.

Let's deal with the rest now. It's important you follow my steps in the right order I describe..

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Then, I notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. McAfee and AVG Antivirus.
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.

After reboot,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

Check next entris if you're not aware that OpenDNS was set here:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{80ED02D6-A5DE-4AED-9CE6-147519D18875}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

These OpenDNS entries are set by Spybot S&D, this in order to deal with the DNS Hijacker you were dealing with. Read here what OpenDNS is.

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, * Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

I have followed the above steps carefully, I decided to just uninstall both AVg and Spybot S&D. When running both scans i confirmed teatimer wasnt runnin with task manager. but there do seem to be some traces left. I notice it does appear in both scans! Please advise if any actions needs takin to rectify this.

Below are the results of the scans.

Many Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

This looks OK again.

Just one important thing to perform though..

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Let me know i your next reply how things are now..

Hi, everything looks OK again.

Well, you have McAfee installed, and i've read this issue a couple of times before. So I am starting to wonder if it's your McAfee causing this. You wouldn't be the first one..

I don't like McAfee anyway, too bloated, too many issues with system speed, connections, startup etc..

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Happy Surfing again!
