I've tried installing Microsoft Office 2000 on my windows 98 computer, but it always fails miserably. In fact, every time it fials so miserably that explorer no longer works, and I have to do a complete recovery of the system, which takes about 2 hours. Any ideas on why it's doing this to me?
When it happens, the installer freezes and requires me to go into task manager and kill it. Then explorer crashes and won't come back up, forcing me to do a hard reboot. When it finally comes back on, explorer doesn't start and the computer becomes useless.

Before I gave up on older computers and windows 98, I found you had to use 98se, update directx to 7
apply other critical updates and update IE to 5.5 no further

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

My Office 2000 loves Win98, I've been using it for 4 years. It installs in everytime I do a rebuild without a problem.

What is your IE version?

As DaChew says you could install the lastest DirectX though I have DX7, DX8, DX8.1 and DX9 installed. There is IE5.0 or 5.5 I think on the Office 2000 CD because it put an icon on your desktop. I've never bothered to use it because I use IE6.0 SP1. Now all these things IE6.0 and the DX's are installed before I install Office.
