Yesterday my computer slowed down severely. I installed several virus detection programs such as AVG, but they didn't detect anything. While I was cleaning up my computer I accidentally deleted the sound driver. Even though it says it re-downloaded it, I don't see the little speaker down in the bottom right hand corner and the computer isn't making any sound. Also, it is SEVERELY slower than it was the other day. I'm thinking it's my windows explorer. Anytime I try and install something, the entire computer slows down. The CPU usage jumps randomly. I can't run some programs, but when I get into others(such as firefox), they go fast within the program. I still have less than an eighth of hard drive space taken up on my Toshiba windows xp. Is there anything I can do?

If you give us the model number for your computer we can try and locate the sound driver for you.

As to the general slowness of your system, check out Bleeping Computer's Slow Computer Checklist.

When the CPU usages jumps up what process or processes are taking up the most CPU?
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.
