I had problems re-installing Symanrtec (after a failed attempt to make a LiveUpdate which failed after working for years)

In addition Contour shuttle peripheral did some funny things lately, like loosing settings after switch off PC. And Windows update failed first tiem 2 days ago.

I guess some spywar or malware is on...
But I am not an expert. Please help me.

I did this HJT file

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum carlicos
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Download Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 to your desktop:
Double click on HJTInstall.exe,it will prompt you to extract hijackthis.exe to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
When the install is complete,HijackThis will automatically launch.
When the license agreement appears, select "I Accept" and then click on the "Do a system scan only" button.
When the scan is complete, click on the "Save Log" button, then save it to your desktop.
Copy and paste the entire contents of that log into your next reply.

Thanks a lot, Richie. Tonight I will do at home what you said above.

By the way, in my desperation, I try to start the PC in safe mode (F8 on start up) and I got blue screen. Just not possible. However in normal mode, starts OK.

Now I tried to save time and download to mi pendrive the programs and at home (where my sick PC is) dowload them to the desktop) But I found a problem: COMBOFIX can not be downloaded (Error 404 Not Found), and I do not find other sites where to download it...

Combofix has been removed from use due to problems until further notice.

Install the latest version of Sun Java.

I had problems re-installing Symanrtec (after a failed attempt to make a LiveUpdate which failed after working for years)

If you want to have another go at reinstalling Norton,do the following first:
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039
*Please Note:*
The Norton Removal Tool will remove all Norton/Symantec products from your pc.

If you're still unable to install Norton successfully,download\install one of the following freeware antivirus programs from the choice below.
Once installed update its definitions and then run a full system virus scan.

AVG7 Free Edition Antivirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup...ree_446a965.exe

Avast! 4 Home Edition:
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/

With you having Service Pack 2 installed i'm presuming you're using the Windows Firewall.
If you're not using Windows Firewall,or you require a more robust third party firewall then download\install one of the following freeware choices:

Outpost Firewall Free:
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/index.php

Sygate Personal Firewall Free Edition:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/

Zone Alarm Free:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001..._737_000_en.exe

You may want to read the following.
Understanding and Using Firewalls:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/understanding-and-using-firewalls/

Download/install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.

Please follow these instructions very carefully.

Launch/start up AVG Anti-Spyware.
On the main page click the 'Update' tab,and then 'Start Update'.
Note:
If you have any problems running the update process prior to running the scan,download/install the 'Full Database' from here:
http://download.ewido.net/avgas-signatures-full-current.exe

Once the updates have been installed,do the following:
Select the 'Scanner' icon at the top of the screen, then select the 'Settings' tab.
Once in the 'Settings' screen, under 'How to act?',then under 'Set default action for detected malware to:', click on 'Recommended actions',then click on 'Quarantine'.
Under 'Reports' select 'Automatically generate report after every scan' and unselect 'Only if threats were found'.

Now run AVG Anti-Spyware.
Click the 'Scanner' icon at the top.
To start the scan click on 'Complete System Scan'.
Please be patient,it takes a while for the scan to finish.

1) Once the scan is complete,do the following.
If AVG Anti-Spyware detected any infected objects:,click on 'Apply All Actions'.

2) Next click on 'Save Report'.
Copy and paste that report into your next reply.
The report can be found under the 'Reports' tab at the top.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware when you've done, then restart your pc.

Also post a new Hijackthis log.
Let me know whats happening now please.

Dear Richie: I am desperated... sorry.. I tell you here the sequence of actions I did and where I am now..

1.- As indicated, I uninstalled all java versions. Restart
2.- Install the latest version. FAILED because:
> Error message during installation: "msiexec.exe encountered a problem"
3.- Install AVG 7 as indicated. FAILED because:
> Error message: "Error opening teh file for writting" offers Abort or Retry. No way

4.- Then I saw in symantec web site how to boot in safe mode from Windows by msconfig > BOOT.ini > SAFEBOOT and I restarted >> BLUE SCREEN

5.- Switch OFF and restart again. Then black screen asking to start on safe, safe with network and Start Windows Normally.

I pushed the last one >> BLUE SCREEN (!!!!)

I repeated switch OOFF/ON again about 10 times and always I get blue screen after this selection of boot mode.

Now I am fully lost, since I do not know how to restart my PC. The only thing I can do by myself is to introduce teh DELL Windows XP disk and RE INSTALLL the full OS. Since I am doing intensive video edition and visual effects, you can imagine the amount of settings, plugins, programs, drivers, etc I have installed....

I ask you for some help to restart the beast.. Until now I was able to work but no possible to install new SW because of the problem.

Obviously I can not send any HJT since I get blue screen in the start up process...

Thanks a lot from a desperated guy.

After AVG7 failed to install, you should have posted back and let me know.
I'm afraid i can't see any other option except to reinstall the operating system, and start out from scratch.

Thanks, Richie... Is my fault.

I was on the hope that some bootable CD with specific content was capable to start again windows "normally"...

As I said, thanks anyway for your nice and excellent support.
