Unidentifiable Virus And Spyware Infection. Help!

Hi there! After fighting to recover my sister's computer from severe virus and spyware infestation, I need your help to ensure I've now got a clean computer. It was suffering from severe wireless network connectivity issues and error messages, MANY spyware popups and webpage redirects, no hibernate/standby/screensavers regardless of automatic settings, and of course, the dreaded blue screen.

Actions I've taken include running full spyware sweeps in safe-mode with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware 2007 and allowing them to fix anything they found. I had to run them several times to get it all off. I initially saved logs, but on subsequent runs, I stupidly saved over the logs with the new ones, so I've got no idea what was removed. :thumbsup: Kicking myself for that.

I've also run Kaspersky, Housecall, Panda, and BitDefender online virus scanners (only Kaspersky found anything, which it was able to remove) and reinstalled, updated, and run AVG Free Edition virus scanner. I then ran McAfee Stinger, which found nothing. Finally, I reinstalled and updated the wireless card driver utility, installed ZoneAlarm Free, and updated Windows through Microsoft's Windows Update. Most of the issues *appear* to be fixed now, with the exception of the auto-hibernate issue.

I've posted the hijackthis log below. Can you help me finish cleaning this PC?

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

Close all browsers/windows/applications, except HijackThis, and click on "fix checked".

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

I was able to delete the three registry keys in HJT per your instructions. I then restarted the system, then proceeded to remove the existing "Kaspersky Online Scanner" entry via the Add/Remove Programs control panel. When the deletion process concluded, I was prompted to restart the system again. After doing so, I disabled the AVG resident scanner, opened IE and went directly to the Kaspersky Online Scanner link you provided. But something is wrong -- After asking that I install an ActiveX control (which I do install) and then clicking RUN on the dialogue box asking if I'd like to run the program, a bizarre "Files Needed" error dialogue pops up. The message text is as follows:

The file '002E08D9.key' on (Unknown) is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp [BROWSE]

When I hit "CANCEL", it appears that the initialization process continues for a few moments, then a red X appears next to the "Initialize Kaspersky Online Scanner" heading, and the program aborts with a message:

You must have administrative rights on this computer;
you also must have the IE security settings to the Medium level."

Of course, I'm in the administrative account on the computer, and the IE security settings have never been changed from Medium. I also made certain that no anti-spyware or anti-virus applications/resident processes were running to interfere with the Kaspersky. This HAS to be because of that missing file error, because the scan worked in the past.

[sighs] Any thoughts or alternatives? Is this a sign of a really bad, sneaky malware? :thumbsup: I went ahead and ran new HJT log for you. Let me know what you think. Thanks a million!

Hi,

There is something wrong with the Kaspersky scanner. You're not the only one. It has been happening to others too. Let's try a different scanner.

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on Posted Image located at the bottom of the page.
  • A "pop up" window will appear. Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place
Begin the scan by selecting Posted Image
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on Posted Image then click Posted Image and post back the contents please.
Edit: The HJT log is clean by the way. How is the performance of the computer?

Hi,

Your logs are clean. Panda is reporting some tracking cookies only.

You can clean your Cache and Cookies in IE7:

" Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
" Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
" Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
" Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
" Click Close below.

Cleaning Cookies in FireFox:

1. In any Firefox window, Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy Icon.
2. Under the Cookies tab, Click Clear Cookies Now button.
3. Click OK to exit Options window.

NOTE: you can set up Firefox to automatically clear cookies and other private data upon exit by clicking Settings button in the Clear Private Data tools section In the Options window:

1. Click Settings button
2. Select the data you would like to clear automatically
3. Place a check mark next to Clear Private Data When Closing Firefox
4. Click OK=>OK to exit the options window

Create a new System Restore point to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Go to Start>Run and type sysdm.cpl. Press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Place a check in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • next, uncheck the same checkbox.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Hi there,

That's excellent news! So I guess I didn't do too shabby a job cleaning it afterall! Yay! :thumbsup: Thank you so much!

Concerning its current performance, well... I'm starting to think the continuing problems with the computer may be power-related. While I had it in my upstairs office, it operated very easily (albeit FULL of malware). After running all the different scans, I was able to leave it running on stress tests for days at a time and never had any problems.

But after returning it to my sister's house, the internet connection began to drop when navigating to intensive sites like some MySpace profiles. Then right clicking tray icons often caused the computer to shut off and restart (namely selecting "Repair" on the network connection would cause this), and finally, items began to close entirely by themselves. For instance, resident AVG and Spybot S&D scanners just disappear with no warning, and the wireless networking utility closes out on it's own, leaving the wireless connection disabled. I'm thinking that's how she ended up getting the malware to begin with: She use the dialup networking when the hi-speed connection would give her problems, and the resident protections would silently close out, leaving her computer wide open to infection. That's just my guess.

Last night, I placed a pretty sizable uninterruptible power supply/line conditioner between her computer and the wall outlet. The problems are continuing, though. The last two things will probably be checking the power cord (it actually had been using my spare one while it was in my office, since she'd given me the wrong cord upon delivery -- so maybe hers is actually bad) and the power supply. It *is* an eMachines T-series....

Any other ideas?
