Hello,

Yesterday, I accidentally downloaded a virus. I currently use Avast antivirus, which immediately detected it four times. I began a full system scan with Avast, when a popup from windows defender also indicated that it discovered this virus. As indicated in the title, the virus is Trojan: Win32/Virtumonde.O. I proceeded to remove it with both Avast and Windows Defender. Another Windows defender popup indicated that my computer needed to be restarted to protect it, (sorry, I don't remember the exact message). I have since done so several times, with no luck at removing the virus. I also tried to quarentine, and then remove it. It has appeared to work at first, but the virus keeps coming back. Some instances of it refer to a .dll file in the C:/windows/system32 folder. Other instances refer to a registry key and/or a file in folder C:\System Volume Information\... I have no folder titled "System Volume Information." I have tried to delete the ones in the system32 folder, but get a message saying that the file cannot be deleted. I tried to perform a clean boot start up, as well as starting the computer in safe mode, none of which worked. I somehow got one instance of the virus deleted. However, I later discovered another one, which I could not delete. It disappeared after I ran a scan with VirtumondoBeGone. (I ran VundoFix first, but it found nothing.) I would also like to add that I read the thread titled "How To Remove Winfixer / Virtumonde / Msevents / Trojan.vundo.b"

Here is the link so you know exactly what I am referring to: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;hl=virtumonde

I then read the preparation guide for use before posting a Hijackthis log. I cleaned out my temporary files and such (as far as I know). I then ran adaware twice, and spybot twice. Spybot also detected this virus, but from what it appears, could not remove it, either. I ran Housecall Antivirus (version 6.6) and Avast, both of which found nothing. I then ran the Stinger program with no results either. I have always used windows firewall and checked for windows updates on a regular basis, so I am confident that this is not the issue. I will paste my hijackthis log below. Please help!

Thanks in advance,
Rango The Clown

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B1BF466-F46B-496B-AF4A-D71C6148433D} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvts - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvts.dll (file missing)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Then reboot your computer.

Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Thank you for your help. Here is my ComboFix log, along with my new Hijackthis log. I would like to mention on the side that my virus checker (Avast) claimed that ComboFix was a virus. Just thought I would let you know. Thanks again.

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Additonally, ComboFix will generate a zipped file on your desktop called Submit [Date Time].zip
Please submit this file to:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4

Please include a link to this topic in the message.

Please post the log from the ComboFix scan located at C:\ComboFix.txt together with a new hijackthislog in your next reply.

Also tell me how your system is running now!

Thank you once again for your help. I have submitted the zip file. Here are the two logs you requested. Also, after I ran ComboFix, Windows Defender said it detected changes. I will run it right now to see if the virus is gone yet. Thank you again.l

I ran Windows Defender and Spybot. Neither detected the virus. Spybot detected a couple of advertising cookies or something, I don't know if those are ads that the virus put on my computer or what. I plan to run a couple more scans, but I don't have time now so I'll do it later. Thank you again.

------------------------------

This log looks clean!
  • Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
    • Turn off System Restore.
      • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Check "Turn off System Restore".
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    • Reboot your computer.
    • Turn ON System Restore.
      • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • UN-Check "Turn off System Restore".
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP make sure you get updated to SP-2!!

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
