I installed a set of USB ports on our PC clone ( about 2 year's old) in the 3.5 internal drive bay connected to a ASUS (TUSL2-C) motherboard. Can WIN XP PRO upgrade the ports to 2.0 via their updates software?

The short answer is No, upgrade is not just software it is also hardware. You can get a 2.0 PCI card rather inexpensively.

Here's some very highly rated PCI USB 2.0 adapters. The ports will be in the back, though.

Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101

SYBA PCI USB 2.0 4+1 port controller card Model SD-V2-5U

VANTEC PCI to USB2.0 Card Model UGT-PC205

If you really want to have the ports in the 3.5" drive bay use this:

SIIG JU-H42B22-S2 4-Port USB2.0 Front Panel Hub

You will have to route a USB "A/B" cable from the back of the box, back into the interior and then to the back of the hub module. Not pretty, but it will work fine.

The alternative is to use the expansion card with a desktop USB hub module. I would suggest using a powered hub over an unpowered one because their are too many USB devices that require more power than an unpowered hub can deliver. Not only that, but powered hubs are almost as inexpensive !

i-rocks ir-4600-BL USB 2.0 Smart Hub Blue

Link Depot USH-2141B 4 Port USB Hub

SABRENT SBT-UHPA USB 2.0 High Speed External 4 Port Hub with Power Adapter

BELKIN F5U237v1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 7-Port Hub

I forgot to mention that many USB PCI plugin cards have 1 "internal" port. So, you could use this to run the USB cable completely within your case from the PCI card to the back of the 3.5 inch front panel hub. Much neater !

Geez, all 3 of the expansion cards listed have an internal USB connector available ! The SIIG front panel hub comes with the proper USB cable for hooking them up because a lot of people want this kind of setup.
