Hello,

My laptop has been starting up very slowly lately and I have had some issues with spyware/trojans etc. I believe I have eliminated the malware but my computer still runs slowly. One other problem is that when I have a window open (mozilla, MS Word, etc), every thirty seconds or so the window becomes inactive and I can no longer type on the screen unless I click on the window again. It seems like a small issue but it is rather frustrating. I have run Spybot and Ad-Aware, which both came up clean, and I also use Symantec AV.
Here is a HJT log.

Hello and welcome aboard

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mevegaba] C:\Program Files\Windows NT\mevegaba22011.exe
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications\rtejexa.html

Now close ALL other open windows but HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Then, please download Combofix to your desktop:
  • Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Hi there, stranger!

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox into it

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ihkmp.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qtstv.bak1

Save it as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

No need to post the resulting log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

====

Please surf here, and paste the following filepath to the blank box:

C:\WINDOWS\winstart.bat

Hit Send file and wait for the scanners to finish up. Post back with the results along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I'm not sure if that came out right. From the VirusTotal scan, all of the antivirus results came up as "--".

Hi again

Let's continue.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. They should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
------

Rename HijackThis.exe to gotcha.exe by right-clicking...then choosing rename.

Now double-click on the newlynamed HijackThis, rescan and post a fresh log :flowers:

Everything seems to be running fine at the moment. It's running at the proper speed. No problems with windows becoming inactive. No popups or anything like that.

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. It also has immunization and realtime protection included.
Prevention Programs:
  • Comodo BOClean <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known adsites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio Personal Firewall and ZoneLabs. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
