I've recently been getting google links hijacked and redirected.

i've run spybot , AVG, ADaware, Stinger. My firewall is running and always has been (microsoft) and yet my pages keep getting redirected.

It did appear to reduce after I'd run the the above, initially looking clean but has since started again.

Please Help...
Many thanks in advance.

Hello el-d,

My firewall is running and always has been (microsoft) and yet my pages keep getting redirected.

I do not recommend Windows XP's software firewall, as it monitors only inbound connections, offering no protection from malware already on your PC. All commercial firewalls offer both inbound and outbound connection monitoring.

Here are five free firewalls available for personal use. If one conflicts with your system, try another.

Important Tips -- Before installing personal firewall software on a Windows XP computer, be sure that the firewall built into Windows XP is turned off.
Never use two software firewalls at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another. Use the vendor's uninstall utility or if not available, use the Windows XP add/remove software tool in the control panel.

You Need a (Properly Configured) Firewall
Understanding and Using Firewalls

I use Comodo firewall.

ZoneAlarm
ZoneAlarm Manual http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/media/pdf/ZAP40_manual.pdf

********************

Open HijackThis
Go to 'config'
Go to 'misc tools'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press 'save list'
A notepad file will open.
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

********************

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log, uninstall manager listing, and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
If you have Norton Antivirus installed then disable script blocking so it will not interfere with the fix.

To disable Norton Script blocking Service:

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties.
On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.

* Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
Start Norton Antivirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Script Blocking.
Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

Hello el-d,

I (as well as MicroSoft, McAfee and Symantec) recommend that you DO NOT have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time.

The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms".

It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection.

In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove one of these. You may choose which one you leave.
AVG Antivirus or Norton/Symantec Antivirus

*******************************************

You have an old version of Ad-Aware SE installed, many old versions of Java and an old Mozilla Firefox. Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs.
From within add/remove program uninstall the following by double-clicking on the following entries:

Ad-Aware SE Personal
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.4)

Then reboot your computer.

*******************************************

Please download, update and run Ad-Aware 2007 Free

Go to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ to download and install Mozilla Frirefox 2.0.0.6.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not download the Beta version 2.0. Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B80740D3-E7CB-4FD2-A17D-FBE5589090EE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\KBDLA32.DLL

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
(Description: A small program that reminds you to register your Creative Labs product (i.e. sound card, video card). Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTxfiHlp] CTXFIHLP.EXE
(Description: Soundblaster X-Fi card related. Not necessary - see this article)

O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
(Description: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it, and thus should remove this entry. )

*******************************************

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\KBDLA32.DLL

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot your computer, post the OTMoveIt log, a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

I only have AVG running. I removed Norton (tried to) over a year back but I just can't seem to get rid of some bits. The uninnstall has gone with only the liveupdate left but it won't let me remove that. V. annoying - any suggestions on removal?

I've uninstalled the java etc but needed to re-install Java update 2 to run a prog.
Now I just have to figure out Comodo - ie it thinks everything is a threat and it blocks access when I start ie, msn, etc.
I'm sure the blocking will calm down once its learnt but its hard to determine whether the access is a threat or just normal activity.

Otherwise it appears to have cleared up the google hijacking but I'll have to give it a few days to be 100% sure.
Will confirm then.
Cheers
El-d

Hello el-d,

I removed Norton (tried to) over a year back but I just can't seem to get rid of some bits. The uninnstall has gone with only the liveupdate left but it won't let me remove that. V. annoying - any suggestions on removal?

Norton is very difficult to remove.
Here's a link to Norton's own removal tool, which they developed in response to complaints that the program did not uninstall completely.
It contains instructions and a download link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039

Note that you only need to perform steps one and two, since you have no interest in reinstalling the program.

After you run the tool, please confirm that the quarantine files are gone by navigating to C:\Program Files\ and checking to see if the folder Norton AntiVirus exists there. If it does, delete it. Let me know what you find and whether you manage to get rid of it.

Now I just have to figure out Comodo - ie it thinks everything is a threat and it blocks access when I start ie, msn, etc.
I'm sure the blocking will calm down once its learnt but its hard to determine whether the access is a threat or just normal activity

.

Comodo has to "learn' which programs are OK to run, so it will ask you about each one you run (if it is OK to run). Normally, if you know the program then you approve running it. It should only do this the first time it sees that program, after that it remember that it is OK. t

The following items in you log may be gone after you run the above program.
If not, then proceed with the fix.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - blank (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - blank (file missing)
O23 - Service: SAVScan - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Antivirus\SAVScan.exe (file missing)

Reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.
