Computer Randomly Shuts Down

To whoever is willing to help:

Your help is greatly appreciated. Starting about three days ago my computer has been randomly shutting down. I thought I did not have a big enough power supply, but that is not the case. I try to run virus system scan, but my computer would shut down before the scan is complete. Below is my system information.

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes.

To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Check in all three categories (Application, Security, and System).

If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem.

How To Use the Event Viewer

This type of rebooting behaviour is often caused by your computer overheating. You can check your system temperatures with SpeedFan, which should give you an indication of whether your system is running too hot.

Also, I would recommend that you open your computer case and make sure all the fans are spinning okay and that there isn't an excessive amount of dust in there that would impede air flow. See the following Bleeping Computer tutorial for guidance on cleaning inside your computer.

Do you have any other indication you might have malware on your computer? Popups, search misdirects, browser hijack, etc.?
The "event" you posted says IEXPLORE.EXE is the application that is hanging. Close IE and try the scans again.
It is not unusual for malware to interfer with scanning. Please let us know the results.
You could also try running your scans in safe mode.

You will notice that the errors have the date and time listed. It would be a big help if you could locate an error that occurred at the same time as when your computer shuts down.

In Windows XP, the default setting is for the computer to reboot automatically when a fatal error occurs. An alternative is to turn off the automatic reboot feature so you can actually see the error code/STOP Message when it happens - this is also known as the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD).

To change the recovery settings and Disable Automatic Rebooting, press WINKEY + Pause/Break keys or right-click on My Computer and select Properties > Advanced tab.
  • Under "Startup and Recovery", click on the "Settings" button and go to "System failure".
  • Make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked and that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked.
  • Click "OK" and reboot for the changes to take effect.
Doing this won't cure your problem but instead of instead of crashing and restarting you will get a blue diagnostic screen with information displayed that will allow you to better trace your problem. See "Extract troubleshooting info from Windows XP BSOD error messages" and "How to Find BSOD Error Messages".

You can also do the following to stop temporarily stop the shutdowns so you have time to investigate.

Click on Start > Run and type: cmd
press Enter.
At the Command Prompt type: shutdown -a
press Enter.
