Hello mlowry816,

Before we start, you need to realize that you are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.

This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.

You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.

I recommend you download the free

Avast or
AntiVir or
AVG antivirus

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

******************

Let's look in a different place for signs.

Open HijackThis
Go to 'config'
Go to 'misc tools'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press 'save list'
A notepad file will open.
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

******************

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5.
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

When done, submit the Uninstall Manager listing, the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi mlowry816,

I installed AVAST Antivirus. I was running a paid version of SPYSWEEPER WITH ANTIVIRUS so I did think I had virus protection.

If you have SPYSWEEPER WITH ANTIVIRUS installed then uninstall AVAST antivirus.
You should never have two antivirus programs running at the same time, as they will give you false positives, slow your computer, and may cause a crash.

Regarding running AVAST with Spysweeper with Antivirus: I did disable the Spysweeper w/AV when I enabled Avast. I want to try the AVAST for VIRUS. I assume keeping the other on the computer for an occasional scan is alright.

SO - I have AVAST and SpyBOT (Spybot finds and fixes some things on startup but can't fix one item, even with immediate reboot and re-scan) and also AVG Spyware and AdAware.
Are there conflicts with any of the above?

NOW MY JAVA HAS BEEN UPDATED. SO I RAN A NEW HIJACK THIS:

Hi mlowry816,

Regarding running AVAST with Spysweeper with Antivirus: I did disable the Spysweeper w/AV when I enabled Avast. I want to try the AVAST for VIRUS. I assume keeping the other on the computer for an occasional scan is alright.

Yes, that is OK. AVAST is very good antivirus program (as is AntVir, and AVG). If you dont like one of them, then try another. But remember to only run one antivirus at a time. Running two will slow your computer and cause conflicts.

SO - I have AVAST and SpyBOT (Spybot finds and fixes some things on startup but can't fix one item, even with immediate reboot and re-scan) and also AVG Spyware and AdAware.
Are there conflicts with any of the above?

No conflicts on those. They are all fine running together.

How much RAM (memory) do you have on this computer?

To find out how much RAM is in your computer:
click on the Start button.
Select Control Panel.
Select System.
Choose the General tab.
The amount of RAM will be listed near the bottom of the window.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not download the Beta version 2.0. Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumprep 0 -k

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(Description: Apple's QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward). Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is in our view an unreasonable resource hog - it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times in earlier versions, and in version 7 it uses as much as 3.4Mb of memory on our test systems. Yet, on Windows PCs hardly anyone starts QuickTime manually, whether from the System Tray or otherwise - what usually happens is that the end-user opens a QuickTime movie file or email attachment and Windows then automatically opens QuickTime to enable the end-user to view the movie or video. There is therefore almost never a need for the end-user to start QuickTime manually from the System Tray. )

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I found I have 256 RAM, and in advanced is says I have 336 megabytes of virtual memory. It has about half the hard drive space free and is an Intel Celeron M Processor 1500 MHz. I will be back after I finish the rest of what you told me. I already have CCLeaner but it is an older version. I will update to the newest one. Thanks again for sticking with me!! Marcia PS - I did and will continue to make donations for help. I want you to know how much I do appreciate this.

Hi Marcia,

I found I have 256 RAM

The reason you have a slow computer is that you do not have enough RAM. You need at least 512 MB RAM to have a fast computer. Many computer makers skimp on the RAM to save a few bucks, and the result is a slow computer.

So I recommend you buy more RAM (another 256 RAM) and add it, as it is not expensive.

Was your computer always slow, or did it slow down recently? If it slowed down recently, what occured right before it slowed down.

Mike, since this is a laptop does that make it a lot harder to add the RAM? This computer was fairly quick BUT has been sluggish for a long time. I have worked on it with Bleeping Computer once before and it was much improved...however it got reinfected with Malware or something again and it has been doing strange things for months. The strange things include days where it was SO SLOW that I would have to wait for each letter I typed to come through...and I did get blue screen errors which I looked and may have been related to a device driver conflict possibly. Also a click on a program would take 6 minutes to load on a bad day...any program or application or IE. Plus a lot of frozen programs and errors. So you can see I am determined to just have a smooth running machine - I don't expect speedy....just functional. I would put in more RAM if I can per your advise. Thanks SifuMike and I will look forward to hearing from you. Marcia

Hi Marcia

Your log looks clean. Good job on the clean up.

If you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Besides insufficent RAM, it may be you have old drivers, applications or hardware problem.

Here is an easy way to find out your programs are out-of-date without running the updaters.
This free online service that will check a range of different software for vulnerabilities. It's quick and simple to use too. http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

I suggest you go to PC Pitstop and run the full tests there. http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp

If you computer is several years old, check with you computer maker to see if new drivers are available. Dell and Gateway support sites have listings for drivers and new updates for their computers.

HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues.

I specialize in malware removal, the you need an expert on RAM.

For the RAM issue, I suggest posting to the Hardware forum. The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to hardware issues.

Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.

When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum.

Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.

Mike! Thank you so much. I did follow through on your other suggestions and this computer is definitely MUCH more liveable. I tried PC PITSTOP (but had to buy the software to run the cleanup). I hope that is a good investment. I have a family with 5 live computers networked and I am usually running from computer to computer doing my amateur repair services

By the way I sent you another payment today...I was out of town.

One other item of note is AVAST FOUND TWO VIRUS FILES in my computer that are in "the vault" now so I hope that was also a big part of my problems.

I am working on my SON's (18 year old's) computer and it is getting a blue screen error often that is page_fault_in_nonpaged_area so I think it might be a bad RAM stick....I am going to investigate in the hardware section now!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP! IT IS PRICELESS AND all your suggestions were on target. Thanks again.

Marcia
