Okay, I just got a new Gateway desktop to replace my hunk-of-junk eMachine the other day, and unfortunately, it came with Vista already installed. I have been using Vista for some months now on my laptop, but would like (nay, need) to have at least one computer with XP... for my sanity and all. Anyway, I have the XP discs that came with the eMachine, as well as another that was obtained (legally with SN and all) through a school program, but neither of them seems to work, even after having 'uninstalled' Vista and deleting the partition it was on. If I try the one from eMachine, the installation finishes, but all I get when I boot up is the option to start in Safe Mode, etc... it won't start in any mode, though. If I try the other disc, XP seems to install, but upon starting Windows, I get the BSoD... every time. I am getting fed up with this thing, and I do not really know that much about computers (in this sense, at least) - can anyone help me get my precious XP back before I take a hammer to it? Thank you in advance for any help.

You said you uninstalled Vista...so you formatted the hard drive with the XP cd...correct?

Actually, yes, I did attempt to format it with the XP disc, and everything was seemingly going fine until the computer restarted after installation. Anyway, thanks for the advice that I am sure was coming, but I have fixed the problem now. I just burned another copy of the disc from the school's website, popped it in, and third time was the charm, I guess.
