Hi,

I recently started getting suspicous pop-ups from a phony anti-spyware program called 'Win AntiVirus 2007 Pro.' It would pop up frequently and say that a program was making unauthorized copies of my system files, and asking me to click it to download anti-spyware software.

When I went to check to see if 'Win AntiVirus 2007 Pro' was really a program I had on my computer, I realized the Control Panel and Task Manager were not accessible. (The link to Control Panel disappeared, and trying to access Control Panel through the run window resulted in a response that the action was not allowed due to restrictions, and to contact my system administrator.)

I had SpywareGaurd running, and it kept warning me that IE default page and other items were being switched to Google, and I was reverting to my original settings. (Goodsearch.com)

I ran Ad-aware, SpywareGaurd, and SpywareBlaster, but they did not fix the problem.

I downloaded Vundofix, and tried to scan with that, but it did not find anything.

I tried to download McAfee security center, but the spyware appeared to block my access to the internet download site.

There was a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in my sytem tray, and I found several files that looked suspicious and attempted to delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\

winavxx
system.exe
printer.exe (could not be deleted - but was later shredded using AVG tools)
hrum373.txt (immediately reappears upon being deleted)
.dll file with name including 373

C:\Documents and Settings\Kerny\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

system.exe 'AntiVirus 2007 Pro'

I dowloaded AVG Anti-spyware, and it found and quarantined:
Trojan.Agent.ali
Downloader.Agent.bxx
Adware.WurldMedia
Not-A-Virus.Downloader.Win32.DigStream.a

After that, AVG blocked the original pop-ups, but now I get frequent pop-ups from AVG stating that I have Trojan.Agent.ali, and I keep selecting clean/quarantine. They pop up during: Startup, IE launch, Windows Explorer launch, HJT scan, any spyware/antivirus scan or download, launching control panel items, etc.

I ran HijackThis, but I am not very knowledgeable about registry items. I did select 'Fix' for items that were obviously including the filenames that I deleted. (winavxx, printer.exe, hrum373.txt) One of them could not be removed:
020 AppInit_DLLs ... hrum373.txt

Spybot SD was able to restore my control panel and task manager.

I ran the programs suggested in the 'Preparation Guide,' but I am still having many pop-ups from AVG indicating that the Trojan.Agent.ali is detected. (It seems to have more each time I reboot.)

After running most of these, I was also able to access the McAfee site, and download the security center including the firewall.

After doing all of this, I tried to get Microsoft updates, but I get a 0x8ddd0003 error (my settings don't allow updates from the site.) I tried to set it as a trusted site, but that did not help.

I've pretty much exhausted my known options, and am getting what seems to be an increasing number of instances where AVG detects the trojan. If you could take a look at my HijackThis log and help me out that would be AWESOME!

Thanks,
Mike

Hi -

If you still have Trojan.Agent.ali on your system, it is a nasty piece of malware. See, here.

Do not do any online transactions until we have cleaned your computer. Change your passwords at sensitive websites (banking, etc.) from a computer you know to be free of malware.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
- Double-click onto SmitfraudFix.exe and a folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
- Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.exe
- Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
- This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns, so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: C:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note: The file process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool." It is not a virus but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs; therefore, they may alert the user.

Post back with the C:\rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick response! I was out of town last night, so I followed your instructions as soon as I got home.

I should mention that the location continually flagged by AVG for Trojan.Agent.ali is C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum373.txt. (The same file I previously tried to delete & shred...it just is re-created whether I delete or quarantine it.)

Also, the SmitfraudFix scan only ran for a couple minutes, so I hope it executed properly...

Here are the results of the scans:

Rapport.txt:

SmitFraudFix v2.215

Scan done at 19:17:42.09, Tue 08/21/2007
Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Kerny\Desktop\SmitfraudFix

Hi -

Please download ComboFix and save it to the Desktop.

1. Disable all real-time antivirus and/or antispyware monitors.
2. Double click on combo.exe and follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt
4. Re-enable your real-time monitors!
5. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

Waterfalls,

Things are looking good here. I ran the ComboFix, and it removed the hrum373.txt file and related registry entry. No sign of Win Antivirus pop-ups, and AVG is no longer detecting the Trojan.Agent.ali. (Note: some of the antivirus programs were re-enabled when the machine rebooted, but it looks like that was OK.)

The logs are pasted below.

Is there anything else I should do to confirm the machine is clean? Do you have any advice on which of these antivirus programs I should keep running real time?

Thanks again for all your help!
Mike

Hi -

The anti-malware programs that you have installed are fine.

However, I see that you have TeaTimer by Spybot Search & Destroy enabled. We will have to disable this because it may interfere with the following steps/fixes.

To disable TeaTimer:
1. Open Spybot-S&D
2. Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3. On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5. Reboot your computer.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer's Real-time Protection again.

Download DelDomains.inf by doing the following:
- Right-click onto HERE
- Select Save As and save it to your desktop as DelDomains.inf
- Right-click on the DelDomains.inf file on your desktop
- Select Install
Note:
- You will not see any on-screen action.
- This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and, for IE7, in "Restricted Zone."
- If you have IE7 and IE-SPYAD, you will need to re-install it when we are done.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

If you did NOT set your start page in Internet Explorer to http://www.goodsearch.com/Default.aspx, then check the following as well:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.goodsearch.com/Default.aspx

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Download and scan with CCleaner.
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop-up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click "exit" when done.

Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.

  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

Hi -

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Then your log will look clean.

You can delete the ComboFix.exe file; the C:\ComboFix folder; the C:\QooBox folder; the C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt and the C:\combofix.txt log that were created.

Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

Install IE-SPYAD puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.

Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again!

Waterfalls,

Thanks so much for all your help! I'm out of town this weekend, but will do the final clean-up as prescribed when I get home on Monday.

The following registry entries seem incomplete...is there anything I should do to clean those up?

O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?
O23 - Service: ZipToA - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZipToA.exe (file missing)

Thanks again...

Mike

Hi -

O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ? is a shortcut to HP 2170 printer' configuration and diagnosis.

O23 - Service: ZipToA - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZipToA.exe (file missing) is related to Iomega's Backup Service. The fact that it says 'file missing' is a quirk with HijackThis. The file is probably there.

Glad I was able to help.
