I keep getting popups that say "only the best" at the top. And, Home:Search page as shown on your website.
I ran the CWShredder for Intermute but it said there was "none present". I know there is.

I downloaded Hijackthis 1.99 but it kept crashing so I downloaded the 1.98 version.
Here is a copy of the log.

Hello tcb,

We will use a CWS fix from LineOfire:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

Attempted Clean Of Temp folder.
Pages Reset... Done!

Yesterday I ran CWShredder (before posting) and when it got to the last entry which was CWS:HomeSearch or something similiar it said "Present" then locked up. When I tried running again right after it said it was "Not Present".
Today, while in safe mode and running CWShredder, it locked up at that same point...just before anything was typed (present or notpresent) then when I re-ran it said "not present" in the column.
Anyway, everything else ran fine. On TrendMicro I had 16 Troj viruses that were non cleanable......I deleted them.
Thanks!!

Hello tcb,

The nasty CWS infection is gone, but there are a few CWS reminents and a Red Sheriff infection on your computer. We will get rid to them shortly.

****************************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold:
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm <===file

****************************************************

Let empty the temp files:

When in Safe Mode, open notepad and paste in the following lines:

del c:\ *.tmp
del %temp%\*.tmp /f
del %windir%\prefetch\*.*
del %windir%\temp\*.* /f

Please download, update and run
Adaware SE

If you need help running this tool, here is a helpful tutorial.
Adaware SE Tutorial

***************************************************

Run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:
Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level.

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:
XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

****************************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

It looks much better, but there are still two items to delete.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com

Hello tcb,

Sticky 015's are a common problem with this malware.

Please download this file to your desktop - http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf .

Right click on the file you downloaded and select install.
This resets the trusted and restricted zones to defaults.

If you are using SpywareBlaster or Spybot that puts entries into the Restricted or Trusted zones, you will have to have them reset them.

Then reboot and submit a Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Computer is running well now. I went back and ran the Ad-Aware that you edited in the above post. It deleted 43 things. Most of which were Cool Web Search entries. Where did they come from?

Anyway, here is the latest HJT log. Looks like it finally took care of the 15's.

Hello tcb,

The log looks clean, congratulations! :flowers: Good job on the cleanup.
Please read and follow Groovicus' Guide to Simple PC Security to help keep yourself from becoming infected again.

A newer version of service pack is available. Service packs increase the safety of your system. Visit Microsoft's windowsupdate site
to download the newest version of the service pack.

Adaware probably found some reminents of CWS still in your registry.

I would recommend you install SpywareBlaster, as that will prevent spyware from getting on your computer.

Here is a SpywareBlaster tutorial

Hi again,

Thanks for all your help with the CW problem!! Everything is running wonderfully!!.......well, except my FrontPage program. I have a website and have not been able to upload changes, etc, to it since doing the "cleaning up" of my computer. I get this warning from McAfee....."Application Layer Gateway Service v5.1.2" for "c:\WINDOWS\system32\alg.exe".
If I click okay on this warning then FP just runs and runs and eventually comes back with an error and won't finish.
OR, if I click No, and not allow it, I get this error message...."unknown winInet error has ocurred (code 12111)".

Do you have any idea why this is happening since running all those programs and deleting, etc?? Did I possibly change something and not change it back?

Thank you for any help you may have.
