I recently had vundo, and I believe I completly removed it with VundoFix.. I did some spyware scans with spybot S&D, Lavasoft's Adaware, and AVG-Antispyware 7.5, which are my prefered spyware removal tools.

However, I am not sure if I have removed everything off my computer. I still hear the clicking of when you open a new window, however nothing opens. I am not getting popups, I just hear the cilcking every now and then.. Which concerns me because it leads me to believe I might still have spyware somewhere.

Also, my desktop icons are surrounded by a black shadow, instead of it being transparent, instead it shows the default color of my desktop around it's name(I am not sure if you understand what I mean here). Usually my desktop's icons don't look like this, it only happened after the infection.

I have gotten a hijackthis log, but I need help on spotting what could be possible spyware and malaware.

Hi furix and welcome to BleepingComputers Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

A. 1. If you have any of the following programs installed on your computer:
  • Netpumper
  • Bitgrabber
  • BitRoll
  • CiD Help / CiD Manager
  • Download Plugin for Internet Explorer
  • Zone Media
please immediately UNINSTALL them using the Add/Remove Programs feature in your Control Panel

If during the uninstall you are asked for the uninstall Verification code , please enter the numbers that will appear in the window.

2. Now REBOOT your system. ==>>>. Important!

3. Download Deljob
  • Save it on your desktop.
  • Doubleclick Deljob.exe.
  • A log, (logit.txt) should open afterwards on your desktop
  • Post the contents of the logfile in your next reply.

B. There are a few file in your log of which I am unsure. For that reason, I need you to submit it them Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\flvDX.dll

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

5. Now, please repeat the same procedure with the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\BRGSp50.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\XDva004.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\neokdss.sys

And.. as for the scanning on files.. I couldn't find flvDX.dll, XDva004.sys, nor neokdss.sys. I even tried running a search using the search for files function.

As far as BRGSp50.sys goes, the website says it's clean.

We will have to try this procedure with Hidden Files Showing:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now please look for those files and submit them, if at all possible. They could be largely responsible for some of your problems but they may also be important to your system so I do not want to delete them without being sure.

Thanks,

Trevuren

I found flvDX.dll and it said it was clean. However, I was not able to find the other 2 files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\XDva004.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\neokdss.sys

They are not there even after I did what you told me.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

There's the new log, also.. everything seems fine. The desktop icons are back to normal, I don't sense any slowdown with the desktop anymore, and it seems like there's no signs of malaware anymore. Thanks a lot! :D

Congratulations, your log looks CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren

Alright, thanks a lot for your help! Also, one more question if possible.. Should I get both spywareblaser and spywareguard? I already had adaware and spybot.
