Posted 18 August 2007 - 04:45 AM

When i connect to the internet(broadband) of late, i notice excessive network traffic.
I installed Sygate Personal Firewall a couple of months ago after going through this forum. What I'd like to know is which processes should be allowed access via the firewall. Recently, I've seen warnings like "Port Scan Attack Logged"
I hope i've been able to make some sense. I've included the HijackThis logfile below.
Thanks

Hi brindanaik,

Welcome to BleepingComputerForums and thanks again for your patience.

Your logs shows two very dangerous trojan are active on your machine: WORM_SDBOT.AXG and W32/Tilebot-HH, worms and IRC backdoor Trojans for the Windows platform and which run continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server allowing a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately until it's clean. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojans have been identified there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.

Visit the following sites for more information on internet theft and when to reformat!

If you have any questions before to come to a final decision, feel free to ask.

Please let me know your decision.

I must say I'm surprised...I always followed the 'rules' on the forum about anti-spyware,firewalls and the works. Any idea how my system was compromised. As you can understand a reformat and reinstall is not something I would like to do but if it is the only option then it has to be done I guess. Can I take a backup of some of my data?

Click the links I posted and you'll find that kind of information.

It's not the only solution since we could try to get rid of the malware but as explained I think it's the best solution.

In my first post I allready referred to here for tips on reformatting/re-installing. Before doing anything read the information presented.
Do you have an external harddisk or an alternative storage system (USB stick, CD's) large enough to copy your entire disk so you can be sure that you don't lose anything (bookmarks, e-mail, passwords, IP dadresses, usernames etc.)? There are some free programmes to help you do the job like: WinBackup 1.86.

Before re-installing the back-upped files on your reformatted computer scan the files with an antivirus.

Furthermore don't forget to change your passwords!

If you need additional help or advice feel free to ask for it in this thread.
