I have run several spyware and anti-virus programs to no avail
including the latest version of SpySweeper and McAfee.

SpySweeper found:
trojan-relayer-midlenet
and the program was removed.

Panda TotalScan found:
Trj/Downloader.MDW
Trj/Clicker.WM
Trj/Spabot.AL

The Panda finding was before running SpySweeper.
Trojan-relayer-midlenet may or may not
have been Trj/Downloader.MDW.

Whatever infection is present on my system is still active.
It even blocked the running of HijackThis. I did finally
run it and produced the log file copied below.

This infection seems to effect FireFox more than IE in that
searches for HijackThis crash FireFox and not IE.
Also, this malicious software is running with no
browser launched as is evidenced with the
crashing of HijackThis and the log file.
I had to change the name of the
log file in order to view it.

This infection apparently monitors any file
named HijackThis and closes programs.

I have exhausted all methods to remove this
and would appreciate the help of a professional
here to finally get rid of this nasty program which
slows my system to a crawl affecting all programs.

Thank you,
Robert...

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum RRS
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop:
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

* Double click on SDFix on your desktop, and install the fix to C:\

Please then reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

* In Safe Mode,go to and open the C:\SDFix folder, then double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the script.
* It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
* When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt into your next reply.

Download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Thank you for your welcome Richie
and thank you for your expert help.

I had access to the system in question today
and followed the instruction outlined in your post.

Below are the reports requested.
Your prescription seems to have helped
the patient and I wonder if you think he is cured.

I have some questions which I
will hold until your next post reply.
I look forward to your analysis then.

Robert...

*Warning*
You've recently had the file commserv.exe on your pc,which is a Backdoor Trojan.
A Backdoor Trojan is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

They are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and may allow an attacker to remotely control the infected machine. Such risks may allow the attacker to install additional malware and use the compromised machine to participate in denial of service attacks, spamming, and bot nets, or to transmit sensitive data to a remote server. The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing 'backdoors,' infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines.

If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one,if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

Since your computer was compromised read:
‘How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware’:

BitDefender had taken a very long time to complete
the online scan and found no items to report.
I am not sure if you think, Richie, this
means the system is now clean.

Below is the latest HijackThis log file.
I can report the system for the first
time in a long time behaving normally.

Substantial progress has certainly been made
and I await your judgement on whether
more needs to be done to finish.

Thanks,
Robert...

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Rescan with Hijackthis and post a new log.

By special request
my good doctor friend Richie
here is the HijackThis safe mode log file.

I can report the system is snappier with
every reboot and performs close to a
clean install, something I was ready
to do before coming here, and I
am hopeful we are near to
the finish line on this.
I look forward to
your diagnosis.

Robert...

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {327C2873-E90D-4c37-AA9D-10AC9BABA46C} - (no file)

Your log is clean
If all's ok,please do the following.

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
In the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Create a Restore Point' button, then click 'Next'.
In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.
Click on 'Yes' at 'Are you sure you want to perform these actions?'.
Now wait until 'Disk Cleanup' finishes and the box disappears.

Read through the information found here,to help you prevent any possible future infections.

I removed the final item in HijackThis.
I take it your work is done and successful.

By the way, in attempting to move
HijackThis from my desktop to another
directory it warns of possible program
malfunctions if one were to do so which
I presume is a warning I can ignore, right?

What do you think was the real villain
of what infected my system and do you
have any favorite preventative software
from those mentioned in the malware link?

Thanks Richie,
Robert...
