Hello everyone. Recently my world of warcraft account was compromised and I am concerned that I may have a keylogger on my PC. I will admit that this may all be paranoia since I did buy the account from someone else and that person may have just taken it back, but I wanted to be sure as I do use this PC for online banking etc. I have also noticed that my PC restarts randomly, which prompted me to ask the experts here about the possibility of my system being infected.

The steps I have already taken:
1. Ran a full AVG free edition scan: Result= turned up no problems
2. Ran a Spybot Search & Destroy scan: Result=turned up no problems
3. Ran Spyware doctor scan: Result= turned up no problems
4. Ran Hijackthis and the following is the log that was generated

So my question is whether I have anything to be concerned about on this system. Worst case scenario of a hard drive format is OK by me, but I would rather avoid that if at all possible. Thanks in advance for your helpful suggestions!

Hello ajlst29 and welcome to BleepingComputer!

My name is Johannes and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please note that comments are made in green, links are in red and important things are outlined by using the blue color.

Please also take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Johannes

Hey Ajlst29,

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install one of these excellent (and free) products:If you want to have a look at the user manuals for the above suggested programs, have a look at the following:Step #1

Lets have a closer look at your pc.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close ALL applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
The logs can be quite lengthy..use two post if you need to get them all in.

Step #2

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the DSS's main.txt and extra.txt.

Thanks,

Johannes

Hey Ajlst29,

I know that firewalls can be a hassle for some games and other programs, but please consider for a second what is more annoying to you - the recurring task of having to clean up your machine of an infection due to lack of protection, or having to train your firewall once for future prevention of being infected again. Considering, that you might even have to change all your passwords in the worst-case scenario, I just personally think that the latter is the best option.

The Windows firewall is better than nothing, but doesn't monitor outgoing packets very well. A third party firewall will bug you with a lot of deny or allow questions for a while, but you should be able to tell it to remember your decision so after about a week or so you will rarely be asked for a decision. It's up to you, I just think you should really give it a try. For a bit more on the firewall thing, have a read here: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST04-004.html.

Step #1

Please create an uninstall list:
  • Start HiJackThis
  • Press 'Config'
  • Press 'Misc Tools'
  • Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
  • Press 'Save List'
  • Save the log to a convenient location
Step #2

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction Here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Please post back with the Uninstall list and the log from the F-Secure scan.

Thanks,

Johannes

Thanks Johannes,

I have downloaded the outpost firewall and will install it asap. The scan is running now and I will post the results in a few minutes.

Hey Ajlst29,

Step #1

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

* Viewpoint
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player

Step #2

Your Java is up-to-date. Good job. You however have the previous version installed on your PC. This enables Malware to use vulnerabilities in those older versions to infect your machine. I therefore suggest you always only have the latest version of Java installed (also saves you some HDD space).

Step #3

I cannot see any traces that your PC is infected, but would like to have a look if something is hiding from us:

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
Step #4

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the F-secure log (fsbl.xxxxxxx.log).

Thanks

Hey ajlst29,

thanks for the log. Looks promissing. However, before we get you ready to go, kindly post the requested new HijackThis log.
