My computer was infected with the VirusProtectPro virus last weekend and I used Smitfraud to remove it a few days later. But my laptop still isn't working the way it was before it was infected. I've scanned it like crazy and the main things I see are infected cookies. I downloaded some Windows updates and some of them failed to install properly, I can't boot in Safe Mode now, computer is running slow just to name a few issues. Here's my log:

Hi Sheesh!

Sorry for the delay, this forum is really busy right now.

I don't see any signs of infection in your log.

I do see two different antivirus scanners installed and running -- McAfee and BitDefender.

This is a bad idea. It does not make you more secure. Quite the opposite, the two programs will cause conflicts, system slowdowns and instability.

So the first thing you need to do, is remove one of those programs.

After you do that, please download and run Combofix, then run HijackThis again:

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Dave

Hi again Sheesh!

I don't know if you still need help, but if you do, I must revise my instructions. Combofix has been withdrawn by the author because a new type of malware is causing problems for users who run the program.

Instead of Combofix I would like you to run Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) which will give me pretty much the same information as Combofix would have. Here are instructions on how to use it.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close all applications, including any that are running minimized in your taskbar.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

Good luck,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the replies. I had lost hope and just scanned my laptop incessantly and got rid of the Smitfraud fix. I was nervous about keeping it because of something else I read. Figured I can download it again if I need it. It works alot better now but I still get Cookies coming up as possibly infected when I do scans. I still can't boot in Safe Mode though but maybe something small is out of whack there. I got Bitdefender based on some instructions someone gave me but I have noticed that it slows down things. I will get rid of that and follow your most recent instructions. Thank you so much for replying. I will update you once I do what you said.

Hi Sheesh!

Just to be clear -- I still want you to uninstall one of those antivirus programs. Just run DSS instead of Combofix and post the logs.

Also a request -- please write your posts using the default font size.

Dave

Hi Sheesh!

Yet another update.

Combofix has been patched and is now available for download again. If you have not yet run DSS, you can instead download and run Combofix as per my original instructions.

Hi Dave

I had written down the instructions for the DSS so I didn't see that Combofix was fine til after. Hope that's Ok. Here's my DSS logs and HJT log:

Hi again Sheesh!

The worst thing I see in your DSS log is all those WildTangent games that HP "gave" you. You should read this article and decide whether you want to keep them.

Your latest HJT log looks clean. How's the computer running?

Hi Dave,

Sorry it took so long to get back. I thought I set it up so that I would get an email when I got a response but apparently that's not the case. The computer is running fine now. Can I delete the DSS and HiJackThis programs? And Yes I did notice all that Wildtangent stuff. I'll take a look at that article. Can I set up a System Restore point now and how do I do that? Also Comcast has a toolbar that offers spyware protection. Is it Ok to download that?
Thanks again

Hi again Sheesh!,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Glad to know your computer is working fine.

Go ahead and delete those tools.

If you don't play the WildTangent games I advise you to remove them. If you do play them, then read the article and decide if you want to continue.

Here's the standard "all clear" speech. This includes the System Restore you asked about:

Please note the edits in brackets. Some steps may not apply or you have already done them.

Not much left except final cleanup. You should delete any specialized tools I asked you to download. Standard antispyware scanners you may keep and use for occasional scans as you see fit, but tools like Gmer, combofix, smitfraudfix et.al. are updated very frequently, and if God forbid you ever need them again, you will need to re-download them anyway.

The next step is to delete all temp files. Note for subsequent runs, uncheck the box to delete prefetch files. History is your option.

Get ATF Cleaner here . It does not require installation, just download it to your desktop.
Double-click the ATFCleaner icon on your desktop to launch the program. For this first run, check the select all box on the main page, then click Empty selected. Then, if you use Firefox or Opera, click on the appropriate tab and repeat the same drill.

Now, re-hide Files and Folders:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Now you need to Flush your System Restore files and set a clean restore point. To do this, you must first disable System Restore, then reboot your computer, and finally, turn System Restore back on...For the details, I refer you to this tutorial:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-xp-system-restore-guide/

Then, please read and implement the recommendations found here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/

There are more tips found here:

Any questions or concerns, just ask.

Hi again,

Sorry I forgot to mention something and answer one of your questions.

Comcast antispyware is CA PestPatrol, by all reports I have seen it's fine, but I have not tried it. If you don't currently have an antispyware scanner installed you can use it, however in my opinion it is not necessary as you already have other antispyware programs.

In your last HJT log it looks like you are still running both BitDefender and McAfee. As I said before, this is a bad idea. I would be happier to see you remove one of those antivirus programs, that is more important than adding PestPatrol.

Please confirm that you have done this.

Dave

Hey,

I removed BitDefender so I don't know why it still shows on my log. I'll search and delete all files associated with it. It's not in my Add/Remve programs section though

Sorry, I'm a doofus. I DO have Windows Defender and I'm guessing that's what you saw......

Can I keep Ad Aware and Spybot? How often should I check for Spyware by the way?

Hi again Sheesh!,

No, I'm the doofus.

You're absolutely right, I saw Windows Defender and thought "Bitdefender." Dumb mistake. Please accept my apologies.

There's no reason for you to get rid of Windows Defender, or Ad-Aware or Spybot either. Just make sure that you only have "real-time protection" enabled for one of these antispyware programs.

Personally I run a scan with one of my antispyware programs every week. I have three of them and I rotate which one I scan with. I also have Spyware Blaster installed and I update it every two weeks. It blocks your browser from known bad websites. Spybot also has a similar feature.

Follow the recommendations in those articles I linked to and your chances of getting re-infected will be drastically reduced.

Cheers,

Dave

Thank you soooooo much! I deleted those Wild Tangent games too by the way so all I need to do is follow those instuctions you gave me and I'll have a completely healthy computer and restore point (in case something goes terribly wrong in the future!)
