Hi

I'm having a number of ad pop ups (in both IE and Firefox).
I also have AVSystemCare pop ups regularly.
I also had another similar winfixer type pop up called WinAntiVirus Pro.
Spybot picks up All-in-one Telcom in the registry but despite saying it's fixed the problem it reappears each time I run Spybot.

I've installed and run AdAware, SpyBot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware and have the full AVG Internet Suite. They have all picked up a few issues. Mainly cookies.

I have since installed SpywareBlaster and SpyGuard.

I think the problem started when i wanted to watch a football game on the i/net. The file i downloaded was called webmediaplayer_setup.exe and i still have ths file in my downloads folder if that's of any use to anyone. I scanned the file and it was okay. It was when the program was installing that McAffee (my I/net security suite program at the time) picked up a virus. I don't know what virus it was as i have since uninstalled McAffee. I then tried to uninstall the webmediaplayer program and had some problems. It wanted to connect to the i/net in order to uninstall and i had no intention of doing that. I'm unsure if the program has been fully removed but it doesn't appear in 'Add/remove programs'.

Anyway, here is my scan. I'd really appreciate any help.
Cheers
Ian

Hi again

I hope I can make my earlier post clearer. Plus I've added a new HijackThis log file.

I have four main issues:

1) AVSystemCare screens pop up warning of viruses - this happens regularly.
2) WinAntiVirus Pro screens pop up warning of viruses - this only happened once or twice a few days ago.
3) New IE and / or Mozilla Firefox screens pop up offering the chance to win things etc. - this happens regularly.
4) Spybot S&D picks up All-in-one Telcom dialer. It notes that it is in the registry and later indicates it has fixed it. However, it continues to appear in later scans.

Other info:

My system doesn't seem slow at all which is good.

I ran a full AVG scan today and it picked up a few more cookies which I've cleared.

See below for a new HijackThis log file.

Cheers
Ian

Hello fizz76

I will be helping you with your problems.

Firstly, I need to see another HijackThis log, but you need to extract (unzip) HijackThis first. Otherwise the backups made when items are fixed won't be secure. The easiest way to accomplish this is to reinstall and delete any copies of HijackThis.zip you have saved.

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

HijackThis_sfx download

Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here by clicking the Add Reply button.

Secondly Run HijackThis.
On the first menu, click Open the Misc Tools Section
Click Open Uninstall Manager
Click Save List - Save it anywhere.
A notepad will pop-up after it's saved, please copy everything in that Notepad and paste it along with the Hijackthis log in your next reply.

Thanks for helping me. I've reinstalled HJT and accessed the program thru the Start menu rather than the zipped file. Here's the new HJT log:

Hi again

Does anyone know what frdwiatfak.exe does? I can't find any info on this file but it was picked up by the AVG Anti-Rootkit tool as a hidden application file in C:\windows\system32\ folder.

See the attached screen dump (word doc) as i couldn't produce a log report from the program.

I'm curious if this has something to do with the problems I'm having.

The Firewall I have (AVG) blocked this application. I selected Always Deny in the firewall pop up screen.

I know it's a long shot but googling 'frdwiatfak.exe' reports nothings, but googling 'fak.exe' lists various worms, viruses and spyware references.

Cheers

Hello fizz76

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\windows\system32\frdwiatfak.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

2. Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
***Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.***
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.

3. Post the combofix.txt log, the result of the jotti scan and a fresh hijackthis log.

Hi DC

I got impatient and after researching Anti Root kit programs established that Panda's Anti Root kit was apparently the best. I ran this and it picked up most of the same files as AVG's Anti Root kit. See Panda Anti root kit log attached. I decided to let Panda wipe the hidden files (C:\windows\system32\frdwiatfak.exe and 3 other folders with the frdwiatfak.exe file in them). AVG picked up one extra file in the c:\windows\prefetch\ directory which i deleted manually. See AVG Anti root kit log in earlier post.

And guess what - my problems seem fixed.
AVSystemCare warning no longer pops up every few minutes while browsing
WinAntiVirus Pro warning no longer pops up either. I hadn't seen this one very often and something else may have fixed this earlier.
New IE and Firefox windows have stopped popping up (adverts and prizes websites) when net email is used, links are clicked, the browser's back button is clicked etc.

I still have the All-in-one Telcom dialer problem but i'm using broadband so i'm not too worried about this. Spybot detects it and claims to clean it but it reappears on the next scan. Perhaps there are some left over bits from an earlier clean. Any thoughts?

Because i deleted the frdwiatfak.exe file i cant run the Jotti on the file. Sorry - but that file was definitely the problem.

DC - Your Combofix link is broken.
Please update and let me know if you need me to run this still.

DC - Perhaps add the Panda / AVG anti root kit to the list of steps to do before posting a HJT log. It might cut down a few queries - if you think these programs are safe. They seem safer than HJT in terms of what you can delete. Please let me know your thoughts and also let me know if you think I've done the right thing.

Cheers
Ian

Hello again.

Here is the correct link for combofix.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.
Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Also could you copy/paste the avg report into your next post as my wordpad cant convert your document.

Cheers

Hi Fizz76

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as aftermath.bfu
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU) and set Filetype to "All files"

RegDeleteKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\frdwiatfak
RegDelValue HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run|frdwiatfak
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\frdwiatfak_navps.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\frdwiatfak_nav.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\frdwiatfak.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\frdwiatfak.exe
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\frdwiatfak_m2s.xml
FileDelete %WINDIR%\frdwiatfak.exe-*.pf

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Posted Image and select EGDACCESS.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it's job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Posted Image again and this time select aftermath.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it's job.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Fizz76

Log looks clean...great job!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
