Hello again marjon1. After reviewing your log there are a few things that we have to fix. These repairs will take a number of steps so please print these directions and then follow each step in order. If you have any questions please contact me before proceeding since you will be editing the registry and using a number of tools to repair your Windows installation. Let's begin:

Step # 1

Tools Needed for this fix:

* HijackThis
* Symantec Removal Tool
* CWShredder
* Ad-Aware

Please click on each of the above links and download the programs as we will be using them throughout this fix.

Step # 2

Follow the directions from Symantec for preparing and running the FxAgentB.exe tool.

When the removal process is finished you will find a log in the directory you ran the tool from. Don't delete it. Please copy & paste the contents of the log as a reply to this post.

Restart the computer.

Step # 3

* Using Windows Explorer go to where you downloaded CWShredder.zip and unzip it into the directory c:\cwshredder.
* Make sure all browser windows are closed and double-click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program.
* Click on the FIX button, NOT the Scan Only button, and let it scan your computer.
* When it is done, exit the program.

Step # 4

* Next, using Internet Explorer, run both of these two online virus scans:

Trend Micro Housecall
Panda ActiveScan

Step # 5

* Again using Windows Explorer go to where you downloaded aawsepersonal.exe and install it.
* Follow the instructions in the link below to make sure that you have the most current updates and the proper settings:

AdAware Tutorial
* Run a scan and fix any problems it finds.
* Exit AdAwareSE.

Step # 6

* OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here along with the log file from the FxAgentB.exe scan as a relpy to this topic and I will review it.

OT :thumbsup:

Hello again marjon1. After reviewing you log we still have some items to fix. Please print these directions and then close all open windows (including this one) and follow these steps in order:

Step # 1

This step is optional but highly recommended. I see that you have BearShare installed. This file-sharing application is directly related to and trageted by some of the malware that we will be removing in later steps. If you would like to use a file-sharing app please go to this link to see which apps are safe and which apps are vulnerable:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

To remove BearShare go to the Control Panel and remove it through Add/Remove Programs.

Step # 2

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:

*Click on Config button
*Click on the Misc Tools button
*Click on the Open Process Manager button

Find the following items and click on each one to select it and then click on the Kill Process button to stop the process.:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mshelp32.exe
c:\Program Files\SED\SED.exe

Now click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

Now click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step # 3

Now follow these steps to reboot into Safe Mode and delete the offending files.

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method:

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Find the following files/directories and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javafix3.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wcmhugj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mshelp32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Abiabf32.dll
c:\windows\jjfixer.exe
C:\Program Files\BearShare\ <--directory (if you removed it)
C:\Program Files\SED\ <--directory

Next, let's clean up the temporary directories:
* Click Start
* Point to Programs
* Point to Accessories
* Point to System Tools
* Click Disk Cleanup.
* Select all items shown and click the OK button.

OK. Reboot your computer normally.

Step # 4

It appears that one of the viruses has disabled Norton Anti-Virus. Try and perform a reinstallation and get Norton operating again.

Step # 5

Now start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it.

OT :thumbsup:

Hello again marjon1. Looks like you've picked up a different adware program. Print off these directions and then follow these steps in order:

Step # 1

Reboot o Safe Mode Using the F8 method:

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Step # 2

Run a full scan with AdAware and fix anything it finds.

Step # 3

Run the CWShredder tool again. Use the Fix option (not just the Scan option).

Step # 4

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.makemesearch.com/?said=317
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.makemesearch.com/?said=317
O2 - BHO: Cls - {CF021F40-3E14-23A5-CBA2-717765721316} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wer1316.dll
O21 - SSODL: mtklefa - {BCC33A9C-5620-48B5-AD98-1C51377232AD} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\klrg32.dll

Now click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step # 5

Find the following files/directories and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wer1316.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\klrg32.dll

Step # 6

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it.

Additional Information

the about:blank is still on my desktop

I don't understand what you mean by this. Is there a shortcut to a webpage on your desktop that says "about:blank" for the title? Explain a little further what this is. Whatever it is don't click on it.

hello again,
my desktop has been taken over by what appears to be a pop up ad for some spyware removal tool. It has an address of c:\about:blank but i cannot find it in any directory on the c drive. When my computer starts up my normal desktop background is there, but then the pop up is back and there while my computer is on. ive run adaware and spybot but neither have cleared the problem. any ideas?
cheers

The files outlined in my previous step are known to be linked with popup advertizing. By removing them we should eliminate the popup add. From your previous comment you might also want to check your desktop settings. In addition to my previous instructions follow these steps:

*right-click on the desktop
*cick on properties
*click on the Web tab
*make sure the checkbox for "Show Web content on my Active Desktop" is unchecked
*click on the Apply button and then the OK button

Post your new log here as recommended above.

when i right click on my desktop i dont get an option like you listed above - it gives a description of what it is (an html document) with a URL of file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html. I have searched for the document and deleted it, but i still have this 'pop-up' type thing covering my desktop. i can still use all of my icons, it is just my background being covered up.
any help would be fantastic, and if you need any more info il do my best to describe it to you!
cheers

Hey marjon1. You have picked up a new infection and I believe that it is directly related to the fact that your Norton Anti-virus is still inactive. It appears that some of the required files are missing and were probably deleted by one of the current or previous infections. If we cannot get Norton reinstalled and operational then you remain at risk for continual reinfections. To begin please proceed with the following steps in order:

Step # 1

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:*Click on Config button
*Click on the Misc Tools button
*Click on the Open Process Manager button
Find the following items and click on each one to select it and then click on the Kill Process button to stop the process.:C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

We are stopping TeaTimer because it could interfere with the steps that follow, NOT because it is a bad process.

Step # 2

Now click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cryptographic Service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\adzopgrw.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows FormatAd] C:\Program Files\Windows FormatAd\WinForm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gah95on6] C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vp6O33T] dinmsp.exe

Now click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step # 3

Now follow these steps to reboot into Safe Mode and delete the offending files.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:* Restart the computer.
* As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
* Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
* Press Enter.
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Find the following files/directories and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\adzopgrw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows FormatAd\ <--directory
dinmsp.exe (do a search and delete all instances)

Next, let's clean up the temporary directories:* Click Start
* Point to Programs
* Point to Accessories
* Point to System Tools
* Click Disk Cleanup
* Select all items shown and click the OK button.
Step # 4

Reboot your computer normally. Reinstall your Norton Anti-virus/Security products and make sure that they are running and perform an update. Now do a complete system scan.

Step # 5

To fix the issue with your desktop let's use the Control Panel instead. Click Start then Control Panel. Click on the Display icon and then on the Web tab. Clear the checkbox to Show Web content on my Active Desktop. Click Apply and then click Ok.

Step # 6

Start HijackThis, perform a new scan and post the log back here. I will review it when it comes in.

OT :thumbsup:
