Hello,

I have a strange popup when WinXP starts, which I have to press OK before I can get to the WinXP login screen. The strange popup is nothing but some scrambled character and an OK button. It won't go away, you can't close it, all you can do is press OK.

Where should I look for clues? I've use Windows Autoruns but seems nothing really wrong. Where would this be set in the msconfig??
Is it some kind of application or a malware?

By the way, the popup still popup even in SAFE mode startup!?

Attached my hitjackit log if it helps ........ Please help!

Hi,

Does it look something similar like this?:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z299/sd.../screenshot.jpg

If so, Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]
"legalnoticecaption"=-
"legalnoticetext"=-
"legalnoticecaption"=""
"legalnoticetext"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"LegalNoticeCaption"=-
"LegalNoticeText"=-
"LegalNoticeCaption"=""
"LegalNoticeText"=""

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Let me know if that solved it.

Hi,

I don't know what exactly happened, but all I know is.. The most common values in the registry which are responsible for a message at Windows Logon (Logon banners) are next values:

LegalNoticeCaption = "The caption text"
LegalNoticeText = "The body of the banner"

They are present under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon" key.

And, they may be present under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system" - key in the registry.

And that's what we have done now.. we cleared out those values.

I almost forgot....
Some entries need to go in your HijackThislog as well as some "unknown" activeX components. Some ActiveX components may be legit, but it won't hurt anyway to fix them since, when you'll visit that same site again, it will prompt again to install the ActiveX component when needed.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {16EC00F3-8614-4C44-B424-106CBB043525} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {16EC00F3-8614-4C44-B424-106CBB043525} - (no file) (HKCU)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Also, Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\WRTService.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Hello,

Just fixed those ActiveX entries as instructed, some of them I reconize like "seteye" one are those survillence system ActiveX components.
As for WRTService.exe, it's one from our company that checks our configuration, so that should be safe :-)

Thanks for the great help!
