Hello,

I am having a very hard time cleaning off my boss's laptop. He has some persistent spyware. Here are the symptoms:
  • Popups redirecting to "antispyware" sites
  • Fake "virus detected" popups and system tray notice, redirecting to same sites
  • Changed desktop background, using files in C:\Windows\privacy_danger\
  • Attempts to change IE home page to softwarereferral.com or similar
Here is what I have done to try to clean it. Nothing has completely worked so far.
  • Ran Norton Antivirus full scan
  • Ran Windows Defender full scan
  • Ran AdAware full scan
  • Ran Spybot Search and Destroy full scan
  • Ran Norton Stinger full scan
  • Ran TrojanHunter full scan
  • Ran TendMicro Housecall antivirus, but it crashed
Here is my HijackThis log. I would really appreciate any advice that anyone could offer! Thank you!!!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Wocket
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hi again, and thanks for your quick replies.

I disabled SD resident, Windows Defender, and Trojan Hunter. I then installed the registry patch and ran SmitfraudFix.

After doing this and rebooting, it appears the problem may be gone. I haven't seen a popup or home page redirect since anyway.

But I was wondering if you could look at my newest logs to double check in case there was anything else I need to watch out for?

In any case, I want to thank you very much for your time. I will try to make a donation in appreciation for your generous volunteer work. My boss also appreciates the help reviving his laptop!

Here are the logs.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double click on Smitfraudfix.cmd
Select #2 and hit Enter to delete the infected files.
You will be prompted: 'Do you want to clean the registry?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): 'Replace infected file ?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process.
The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post the smitfraudfix report, and a new Hijack This log into your next reply.

Richie, thanks so much for your help and advice. There's pretty much no way I'd be able to fix this without your help.

I'll check out ATF Cleaner and update Java too. Hopefully my boss will not stumble into any more malware!

And I will try to make a donation in gratitude for your assistance! Thanks!
