Hi guys, let me first thank you for the great articles on this site and wealth of forum knowledge.

I foolishly agreed to fix a friends computer thinking it would be a case of just running some spyware removal programs, though when that didnt work I went looking for some explanations on how these things work as I suspected it could be a Trojan.

The laptop in question was popping up browser advertisements and a fake tray icon system alert advertisingĖœvirus protect pro.

Just to let you know what I have tried so far...

I first read http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-remove-a-trojan-virus-worm-or-malware/

Found something on autoruns which was Trojan related though I can't remember what it was called. Deleted it.

I used ad aware and spyware S&D which found a handful of items which would just re-appear every time I restarted. A scan with Symantec Corporate snagged the zlob Trojan, at which point I used the SmitfraudFix.exe tutorial.

The virus protect pro is now gone, but the popups persist though some are displaying php error strings.

I am following the HiJackThis preparation tutorial and posting the resulting log.

One thing to note however; The last remaining item snagged by spybot S&D (Disc Cleaner 2006) cannot be removed, even when allowing spybot try on startup. I have tried this several times with no luck.

It would be much appreciated if someone could look over this log, and again thanks for the great resources so far.

Chris

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum placid
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Also post a new Hijackthis log.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.

2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
