So here's my problem. My Compaq laptop was infected with the VirusProtectPro virus over the weekend. After hours, I mean days, of frustration and research I found this site and found a way to remove it. I used that SmitFraudFix; ran it in Safe Mode and finally got rid of that annoying System Alert on my toolbar. Problem is, my laptop still doesn't seem to be working the way it was pre-VPP. I ran my McAfee a gazillion times and it finds these cookies (tacoda.net mainly) but no infections. I used Spybot SD and again miscellaneous cookies. I also ran Windows Defender and it says I'm clean. But when I go to a website where I have to click on something, I have to do it twice. I went to the Windows site recently figuring maybe I need to make sure I have everything updated and I downloaded something with Microsoft.NET. It tried to install something called Photogallery but it gave an error message. Don't know if that's related to the original problem. SO I figure maybe I need to go into Safe Mode and do a full sys scan from there, but now when I hit F8, my computer will bypass Safe Mode. A white flashing bar appears for a split second at the top of the screen, the computer flashes, then the Windows screen comes. And I know I hit F8 at the right moment.

I use Windows XP. McAfee is my primary antiviral/security provider. Due to all this mess I have downloaded SpyBot SD, Windows Defender, Stinger (removed from progs but still have install thingee) Ad-Aware 2007 Free (which acted weird when I downloaded it. I couldn't close out of the lavasoft site normally - had to hit Ctrl Alt Del). What is going on?????

It's been a full day and I haven't heard anything. With the luck I'm having, my post will get overlooked!

Your log is posted here.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

After posting a log you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make may cause confusion for the member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

To avoid confusing, I am closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If you still need assistance after your log has been reviewed and you have been cleared, please PM me or another moderator and we will re-open this topic.

Thanks for your cooperation and good luck with your log.
