Hello
I started my computer in safe mode, and edited the security permissions for the K: drive, to prevent the Guest account from accessing it.
This worked, but I wanted to take it a step further.
I edited the registry to prevent the Guest account from seeing the K: drive. I edited this key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\
Created a new DWORD called NoViewOnDrive, and set it to binary 1024.
Restarted my comp
and then logged in to my administrator account
And it took about 5 minutes after it logged on to show windows explorer (desktop icons and start menu/task bar)
Then it took another couple of minutes to start up the other processes, such as trillian and xfire (IM clients).
Once everything started up, I tried to access the K drive on my admin account.
I noticed that it let me go from K: to the 3 folders in the root.
But it wouldn't let me open up those folders.
So I changed the properties for each one to allow the administrator to access that folder, all subfolders and files.
Once again, that worked 1 level deep.
Is there an easier way to allow the administrator to access the entire K drive, and prevent the Guest from seeing or accessing it, and what do I have to do to undo my steps?
I attempted to system restore to August 1, which was before I left for vacation.
When it restarted, it said no changes have been made to your computer.
I clicked on "Home" (to take me back to the sysrestore main menu)
and then I clicked "Next" (Restore your system to a previous restore point)
And there were no restore points aside from the one it just made.
Here's a HJT log... taking forever to get it to run though, wow, explorer is really slow...... it's like it loads in "waves"
every several minutes it decides to work for 10 second surges... eventually HJT will be done...
A reply asap would be greatly appreciated. I understand that you're backed up on logs, but an extremely slow system is very frustrating.

I have no idea how to correct what has happened if you haven't made a backup before playing around in the registry. That is not what HijackThis is desgned for--basically we just look at startup locations in the registry to help remove malware and some related troubleshooting.

All I can tell you is that System Restore probably didn't work because your Restore Points became corrupted and the only way to fix that is to turn SR off then back on again. You will lose all your Restore Points, but you can't use them anyway so you are sol there as far as a solution to your problem. Another reason to not depend only on SR, make a backup of your entire registry before you ever attempt to edit it, especially if you aren't sure of what you are doing. You can also export the key you are working on for a quick backup.

There may be a way to restore the registry from a backup, but as already mentioned, that is outside the purvue of this forum. Please only post logs here if you have good reason to believe you are infected with malware. For your issue you should start a new topic in the Windows XP Home and Professional or other forum. This topic is closed.
