Turn on (or off) the firewall:

Recommend getting Comodo or Zone Alarm free firewalls

Do you have some sort of all-in-one AV/AS installed such as one of Norton's products?
Cheers,
John

Hiya,

If your free addition AVG anti-virus icon is showing monochrome/grey in the task bar, it relates to the fact that the definition files are out of date and that they need to be updated via a web update.

With this in mind XP sometimes warns you of this error by showing a red security centre icon with a black cross through it on the task bar.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Tony.
