I thought I might be battling a virus problem & discovered 99 various viruses, plus spyware etc. I ran through various fixes & repairs, then did the entire list of options posted here that I needed to do before posting my log. I actually did most of the list multiple times as things still kept showing up.

I also followed advice given to me in this thread. The first time I ran Spyware Blaster I did so in safe mode as instructed & was locked into safe mode no matter what I did. I ended up creating a quick boot disk & using that to bypass the boot sequence & it seemed to automatically correct itself after I did that.

I'm pretty sure I still have *something* on my PC, but can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I'm currently running a trial of the Zone Alarm Security Suite & am seriously thinking about buying it to avoid this happening again, I have NEVER had an infection like this before. I was running AVG Anti-virus but it can't be doing its job if it let through so many viruses, etc

Since installing the Zone Alarm Suite, I performed both a virus & spyware scans, ran Spyware Blaster & yet another BitDefender Scan (about the 8th time due to stuff turning up each previous time) and now the PC won't switch off. When I shut down, I have to reset it on the final shot down screen then use the on/off switch to turn it off during boot up instead of it switching itself off.

Thanks so much for any help, I really appreciate it!

Edited to add: I have noticed my home pages on IE have been re-set and it looks like in Firefox as well to Microsoft/yahoo websites... I didn't do this & have no idea why they have changed. it's very bizarre.

Hello Mish,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

Since installing the Zone Alarm Suite, I performed both a virus & spyware scans, ran Spyware Blaster & yet another BitDefender Scan (about the 8th time due to stuff turning up each previous time)

You dont run SpywareBlaster. You just update it weekly and it runs in the background, preventing installation of spyware.
SpywareBlaster helps to:
Prevent the installation of Active X-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

Please read the SpywareBlaster Tutorial

I'm pretty sure I still have *something* on my PC, but can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I'm currently running a trial of the Zone Alarm Security Suite & am seriously thinking about buying it to avoid this happening again, I have NEVER had an infection like this before. I was running AVG Anti-virus but it can't be doing its job if it let through so many viruses, etc

Rather than pay for Zone Alarm Security Suite, I recommend using one of the free anti virus programs and a free firewall. No antivirus program (free or paid for), even AVG antivirus, Norton AV, McAfee AV or Zone Alarm AV, will catch everthing - nothing is perfect.

I recommend you download the free

Avast or
AVG antivirus or
AntiVir
or Active Virus Shield (Powered by Kaspersky),

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Setup tutorial for Active Virus Shield

How to Install, Configure, and Use Avast Antivirus

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Here are five free firewalls available for personal use. If one conflicts with your system, try another.
I use Comodo firewall.

Lets make sure you have no lurking malware.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5.
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop.
A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

******************

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the ComboFix log, the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I also wanted to add, I removed ZoneAlarm from my system as a firewall as I just wasn't happy with it & have switched to Comodo. It already seems to be less intrusive even after just making the switch a very short time ago, so hopefully it will only get better.

Hi mish,

Comodo firewill is a great firewall. It is powerful and easy to use.

I see no malware in your Hijackthis log, but there are some items we can clean up.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not download the Beta version 2.0. Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
(Description: System Tray icon for the Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Manager for AC97 onboard audio. Available via Start -> Settings-> Control Panel. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi again!

That round of work seems to have made a big difference in the speed of things. I'm a heavy graphics user & I noticed a big difference in the speed of Paint Shop Pro X when it opened, and the temp file error that I'd been getting for a while is no longer there as well. Photoshop CS2 also opens a lot more quickly (although I am still getting an error in that, it says it can't find the MSVCR10.dll file, but if I click 'ok' on the error message a dozen times, the program opens anyway... no clue what it means, so I'd just been ignoring it... yes I know I'm showing my computer ignorance in doing that  )

The only other thing that still seems to be going wrong is the computer randomly shuts itself down without warning & re-boots itself. I had been told it might have been the fans not working properly & did a full pysical clean of the computer using compressed air, but it's still doing it. (If this is an issue that needs to be dealt with separately to the rest, just let me know & I'll make a separate post for it)

Hi mish,

I see two more items you can remove.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(Description: Apple's QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward). Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is in our view an unreasonable resource hog - it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times in earlier versions, and in version 7 it uses as much as 3.4Mb of memory on our test systems. Yet, on Windows PCs hardly anyone starts QuickTime manually, whether from the System Tray or otherwise - what usually happens is that the end-user opens a QuickTime movie file or email attachment and Windows then automatically opens QuickTime to enable the end-user to view the movie or video. There is therefore almost never a need for the end-user to start QuickTime manually from the System Tray.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
(Description: Background task installed by Apple's iTunes music player and also by version 7 of QuickTime which now comes inseparably bundled with iTunes. This task, does not actually need to be installed as a startup since iTunes starts it up anyway when it needs it. Let iTunes start it up whenever it needs to, particularly since it has a history of occasionally conflicting with other software and it uses nearly 6Mb of memory.

reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log

I noticed a big difference in the speed of Paint Shop Pro X when it opened, and the temp file error that I'd been getting for a while is no longer there as well. Photoshop CS2 also opens a lot more quickly (although I am still getting an error in that, it says it can't find the MSVCR10.dll file, but if I click 'ok' on the error message a dozen times, the program opens anyway... no clue what it means, so I'd just been ignoring it.

I would uninstall Photoshop CS2 and reinstall it.

It is not malware, so it has to be hardware, drivers, or some application problem.

The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues.

HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues.

For the type of issue(s) you describe I would suggest posting to the Hardware forum. The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to hardware issues. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.

When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum.

Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!
