I recently repaired my windows installation with the windows xp home edition (service pack 1a) disk. This downgrades windows XP from service pack 2 to 1a. So I went online and downloaded WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe and it hangs at the RUNNING PROCESSES BEFORE INSTALL step. I also tried using the service pack 2 cd that I got from microsoft a while ago... still no luck.

The 2 most common reasons for a failure of SP2 to install are incompatible drivers and malware. Since this is a fresh repair, I'd first suspect that the drivers are corrupt or incompatible. Try updating your system's drivers (available from the manufacturer's website) to the latest available versions - then retry installing SP2.

You may also want to try these free, online scans to ensure that you are free of malware:

Depends on what's installed in your system, but the most important are:
-motherboard/chipset
-video
-network
-sound
-any other devices that are built into the motherboard.

Generally these are available at the website of the manufacturer of your system - but you can also get a free scan here: http://www.driveragent.com (you don't have to subscribe to get a report - and you'll be able to download the drivers for free). Please be advised that this list is a bit "tricky" - so post the results here so we can have a look at it first.
