Upon reboot of computer when windows xp professional booted, the quick launch toolbar is missing. If I right click on taskbar, go to toolbars, and try to check the Quick Launch, an error that says "cannot create toolbar." appears. If I right click on taskbar, go to properties, and check "Show Quick Launch", hit apply... Hit OK... still no quick launch. Then I click
Left .. on the start tab to bring up the main menu , nothing happens …
Then I right click the start tab.. And this brings up the Open / explore
Pop up OK … any one know how I can get back to normal please..?

Thanks Mypenry

Try a r click on the taskbar, click properties. Make sure the lock the task bar is not checked. if it is, uncheck, click apply. Then try to re apply the quick launch.

Almost sounds like something has altered windows explorer, run a trend micro house call scan and see what happens.

Ive just noticed that when I right click taskbar, click properties, tick the show quick launch box, and then
click > apply > Ok , then go to the taskbar right click > Toolbars > and left click > quick launch
the error message pops on screen ..."cannot create toolbar."

The other strange thing is when I do the above .. right click taskbar, click properties, tick the show quick launch box, and then
click > apply > Ok , if i then go back to the tick box for show quick launch , its not showing the tick i put in the last time..?

thanks Mypenry

yes. restore your last c cleaner backup and don't mess with the registry any more, remember you stand a better chance of hosing your machine with a registry cleaner than any other way!

if that does not work, back to the housecall scan.

In case oldf@rt's advice doesn't do the trick you can try this one from Kelly's Korner. It may get the Quicklaunch back.

117 Restore the Task bar and start menu

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

This is a VBS script that you either have to save the text to a file named NODESKTOP.REG or right-click on line 117 and choose 'Save link as' or 'Save Target as' to save it as a file. Once the file has been created right-click on it and select Merge to execute it.

You can also try:

Well Ive tried all the suggestions above, but the Trend House call ( after taking nearly 4 Hours to download due to a very slow dial up connection here ) it showed that there had been an error
While downloading, so I did not get to use this option. But did run scans with....

AVG Anti-Spyware
Nod 32
Spybot Search & destroy
SuperAntiSpyware
a-Squared Free
AVG AntiRootKit

all the scans came up clean

The situation now is ...

A. I boot up the computer ...OK

B. The Quick Launch Icons are showing in the toolbar

C. The Start Tab is showing bottom left hand of screen OK

D. I left click the start tab > the small menu pops up OK
I Hover the mouse cursor over the small menu pop up
list , on the programs > the full list of programs are shown to the right OK

E. I insert my flash drive in a USB socket, this drive contains FireFox Portable
and Thunderbird. the New Hardware balloon pops on screen showing the
flash drive has been connected

F. I right click an empty space on the desktop area > left click on properties >
left click desk top tab > select none > left click OK. (Desktop now dark Blue)

G. Right click toolbar > left click properties > check taskbar appearance
the only things with a tick are ....

Keep the Taskbar on top of other windows

Show Quick Launch

I check the Notification area and the only items ticked are ...

Show the clock

H. I test the quick launch toolbar Icons > all working OK

I . Connect to the Internet ( Dial Up )

J Internet connection made ( 44Kbps )

K recheck all the above ...all show still OK and the same

L. Test open an application from desktop Icon ( Acronis ) ... OK

M. re check all the above .. all still look OK and the same.

N. Test internet connection by up dating the AVG Anti-Spyware ..Up dates OK

O. start Portable Firefox from flash drive.... OK

P. connect to Bleepingcomputer forum .... OK

Q . Start Portable Thunderbird from same flash drive as Firefox

I then do some surfing and about 1 hour into the session
I left click the ‘ Start Tab’ to bring up the menu , this time the menu does not pop
Up, If I right click the start tab , left click .. move the mouse pointer to Explore
And left click Explore the window then opens up as normal. And I can access the other
Options here OK ( Open, search Etc )

The quick Launch icons are still shown on the toolbar and still working
So at this point, it’s a problem with the Start Tab now not working..?

So then I right click Toolbar, left click … Properties and the Taskbar – Start Menu properties
Box appears OK, in the Taskbar appearance area the only boxes checked are…

Keep the taskbar on top of other windows

Show Quick Launch

And in the Notification Area , the only boxes checked are…

Show the clock

I then put a check into the … hide Inactive Icons box, and then left click..

Customize …

When I click Customize the Customize Notifications box appears on screen OK
But it’s all ‘’ blank ‘’ with no icons listed at all..? Where in the past some icons were
Listed..?

No matter what I try and do now the
start tab won’t now work which it did when I first booted up ..?

the only was I can get the start up tab to work is to re boot up
but after about an hour its back to not working again …?

Any ideas please …..
