I have tried everything you suggested before sending this email. Several different spyware programs and so on. Sometimes it seems like I've licked the problem, but just as I was preparing to download Hijackthis, again the popups started...smiley face popups, all sorts..

It all began with me clicking on a sort of active x download. From there my homepage was hijacked by about:blank, which I appear to have cleared up. But the popups that started at the same time, one after the other, I can't seem to get rid of. Please help.

Thanks for any help you can provide. Please find below my hijack this log:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum dutchcan42
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please move HijackThis to a permanent folder on the hard drive such as C:\HJT.
Create a new folder and place your HijackThis.exe inside that folder so that the backups of log changes it creates are saved in the same folder and can be used to reverse any line entry deletion if found to be necessary.
If you run Hijackthis from the desktop, the files it removes will not be backed up properly.

How to create a new folder named HJT
1. Click Start/My Computer,in the 'My Computer' window, open the window in which you want to create the new folder, click on Local Disk C:
2. From the 'File' menu choose 'New'.
3. From the 'New' menu choose 'Folder'.
4. Type the folder name: HJT
5. Then press Enter.

----------------------------------------------------

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

----------------------------------------------------

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri), to your desktop.
Double click on Smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option 1 Search, by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy and paste the content of that report into your next reply.

*IMPORTANT*
Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Also post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double click on Smitfraudfix.cmd
Select #2 and hit Enter to delete the infected files.
You will be prompted: 'Do you want to clean the registry?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): 'Replace infected file ?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process.
The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post the Smitfraudfix report into your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combofix.exe again and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

Also post a new Hijackthis log.

Wow. How you ever find your way around this information is beyond me, but it's made a huge difference in how my machiner runs. Everything is faster, from startup to explorer searches.

I have the information you requested except for one..the OTMOVEIT log.. it requested that I reboot, which I did before I copied the log. I suppose it's now lost forever..

Here's the other info you wanted:

Your Hijackthis log is clean, but i'ed like to see a fresh Combofix.txt please.

Richie, I can't thank you enough. It's as if I have my computer back. I've read the piece on Malware, and will follow it's guidelines to prevent this from happening again.

I will definitely be donating to your cause and pass word what a terrific site this is.

Cheers!
Pamela
