Hello Sarah8503,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

You have some malware on your computer that we need to remove.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not download the Beta version 2.0. Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: rightonadz.biz browser optimizer - {36A91CEC-6C71-4758-B492-397BFC8E96A2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: adssite - {F31B3634-12AA-41ca-B021-0685C3B3E4CA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsz12.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adstart] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll" DllVerify

*******************************************

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Windows\ALCMTR.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsz12.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan.
Click on I Agree.
Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner.

When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan".
Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

Post the OTMoveIt log, the BitDefender log, a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

just a quick question - I have been getting error messages when I run IE, saying it has to close. Asking if I want to send an error report. Could the malware be the reason for that, or is it something else?

edit: I got half way through the BitDefender Scan, and my IE froze and said it needed to close. I will go to send an error report, and it says I have no internet connection.

Hello Sarah8503,

just a quick question - I have been getting error messages when I run IE, saying it has to close. Asking if I want to send an error report. Could the malware be the reason for that, or is it something else?

What do the error messages say? Please post the exact error message you are getting.
It may be malware causing the problem, but it is really too early to tell.

edit: I got half way through the BitDefender Scan, and my IE froze and said it needed to close. I will go to send an error report, and it says I have no internet connection

We will try Kaspersky scanner below (see below) and see if it finds anything.

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Warning: The Kaspersky Online Scanner may not run successfully while any other Anti-Virus software is running. If you have Anti-Virus software installed, please
temporarily disable your AV protection before running the Kaspersky Online Scanner. Reenable it after the scan is finished.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
* If you're downloading torrents in the background, please disconnect all of them.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please perform this online scan:

Kaspersky Webscan

This scan require Internet Explorer to run.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"

A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect.
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"

Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply. If it is too big to post, then attach the file.

*******************************************

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the ComboFix log, the Kaspersky scan log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: you can attach the Kaspersky scan log if it is too big too post. But do not attach the ComboFix log and Hijackthis logs as they will be small.

Hello Sarah8503,

ComboFix and Kaspersky scans looks clean, but we still have two items to fix on Hijackthis log.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Finally, reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi Sarah,

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

I just wanted to say, and I hope no one turns me in for this, but I burn movies, and the software I used, It would take up to 5 hours to burn 1 movie, since I ran those test and scans - it's not going faster then ever.

So, my question is - would it hurt to run the CCleaner once a month? Because my computer gets used once if not twice a day and it gets a lot of files and stuff on it.

You can run CCleaner whenever you want.
Once a day, once a week or once a month. It just cleans out you temp folder and gives you more room on your hard drive. Read the tutorial I posted with CCleaner.
