Please help!! I'm sooo lost! Also, I'm on a "network" (that really sucks... gets lots of viruses). They made me delete my virus protection so that it wouldn't interfer with theirs (which also sucks), so is there anyway I can keep this from happening again? If there is and you can help me out that would be GREAT

Thanks in advance,
Rachiela

Hello Rachiela100,
You have CWS infection, so we will use this fix from LineOFire.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

The only complication I had was my own ignorance so I have a question about the TrendMicro Housecall; I completed the scan and it had 16 Uncleanable Files that consisted of (what I believed were) Trojans and the such, should I or should I not delete them? Just wondering. Thanks so much for your help.

Hello Rachiela,

You have some malware on computer, so lets get rid of it.

The only complication I had was my own ignorance so I have a question about the TrendMicro Housecall; I completed the scan and it had 16 Uncleanable Files that consisted of (what I believed were) Trojans and the such, should I or should I not delete them?

If they are viruses or trojans, then delete them. If they do not delete, then let me know the file names and the locations.

Reboot your Computer.

I haven't seen it run this fast since I watched Forrest Gump... yeah, I know. Bad joke. Anyways, it seems to be running much faster. I have my homepage back, AIM is working, and the virus thing isn't popping up every fifteen seconds.

Here's my new HijackThis log:

And I went ahead and ran the TrendMicro Housecall again and deleted everything.

But I did have two real quick questions.

1) I couldn't find a few of the files you told me to delete when I went to find them:
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mfcrf32.dll
C:\ProgramFiles\VVSN
C:\ProgramFiles\WildTangent
So, were those files I was supposed to find or were they "look for them and delete them if you find them" files?

2) And also when I ran the 'clean.bat' program I ran across this problem:
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\*.tmp c;\*, Are you sure <Y/N>?Y 'Enter'
Could not find C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\*.tmp
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\DOCUM~1\Ziggy\LOCALS~1\Temp\*.tmp/f
Is that alright or should I run it again?

Thanks for all the time you've put in to this and for putting up with my "cubie" questions.

Is this going to be a problem... I don't know if I screwed up or what...

Sorry.

Hello Rachiela,

Your log looks much better. Only a few minor items left to take care of.

****************************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3A175AA1-C661-1142-D773-47AE66A178FA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcrf32.dll (file missing)

O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

****************************************************
Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold:
C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus\ <=== folder

****************************************************
In HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot >
Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcrf32.dll and double-click on it. When prompted to reboot, just select "Yes".

****************************************************

But I did have two real quick questions.

1) I couldn't find a few of the files you told me to delete when I went to find them:
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mfcrf32.dll
C:\ProgramFiles\VVSN
C:\ProgramFiles\WildTangent
So, were those files I was supposed to find or were they "look for them and delete them if you find them" files?

Its a "look for them and delete them if you find them". Hijackthis delete zeta.exe.

2) And also when I ran the 'clean.bat' program I ran across this problem:
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\*.tmp c;\*, Are you sure <Y/N>?Y 'Enter'
Could not find C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\*.tmp
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Ziggy\Desktop>del c:\DOCUM~1\Ziggy\LOCALS~1\Temp\*.tmp/f
Is that alright or should I run it again?

No, do not run it again. Lets do this instead.
Download CCleaner
Open the program, click on the Windows Tab, and click on Run Cleaner.

I just realized after I posted and I was rereading it that I had tried to delete something and it's still there.

****************************************************

Those are very stubborn O15 items. :flowers:
Please download this file to your desktop - http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf .

Right click on the file you downloaded and select install. This resets the trusted and restricted zones to defaults.

Hello there!

I ran into a few mild problems.

1) I could not find C:\Program Files\Windows AdStatus\ to delete it.

2) I could not find C:\WINDOWS\System32\mfcrf32.dll

With both of these files I have gone to where they should be and, when not finding them, searched the whole file looking for them to no avail... What should I do?

On a more positive note... I think you got rid of the 015's! Yeah! Here's my logfile...

Hello Rachiela,

That is OK that you did not find those files, as Hijackthis deleted them.

The log looks clean, congratulations! You did a good job on the cleanup. :flowers:

Please read and follow Groovicus' Guide to Simple PC Security to help keep yourself from becoming infected again.

A newer version of service pack is available. Service packs increase the safety of your system. Visit Microsoft's windowsupdate site
to download the newest version of the service pack.

I would recommend you install SpywareBlaster (free), as that will prevent spyware from getting on your computer.

Here is a SpywareBlaster tutorial

Please feel free to come back whenever you have malware problem.
