I found 7 'pornish' type entries which all appeared together in my 'favourites'
as well as my 'home page' changed. I managed to remove/restore h/page
with 'start-page guard', but spybot, adaware, avg had no results. I can delete
them all separately, but they all reappear next start. My thanks to Koan. (Dunjon)

Hi Dunjon,

You are currently using hijackthis from a within a zip file. This can cause problems. Please create a directory on your C: drive.

To do this:
Click My Computer, then C:\
Right click in the right-hand panel.
In the menu that opens, click New>Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder.
Rename it"HJT".

Download a new copy of Hijackthis? (version 1.99.0) and unzip it into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Click the "Add Reply" button top right in this thread and post a new log in this thread and we'll be glad to assist you if we can.

Thank you.

Hi Dunjon,

You may want to print these instructions, since you're closing your Web Browser. If you have any problems and need assistance please post back.

If you haven't already done so make sure you unzip Hijackthis into its own folder. Do not proceed unless and until you do. I'm puzzled by this HIJACKTHIS_SFX folder name, Did you select it yourself?

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

Download CWShredder from the following site:CWShredder Download Site

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

How to remove CoolWebSearch with CWShredder

Open Hijackthis, take another scan and place a checkmark next to these entries.

The next line is a restriction. If you didn't set it yourself or have it set by a software program such as Spybot Search and Destroy then mark the check-box on the left. If you intentionally set the restriction, then leave it alone.

Do you still use this programme? if not I recommend fixing it:
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with Go!Zilla - file://C:\PROGRAM FILES\GO!ZILLA\download-with-gozilla.html

Close all open Windows except Hijackthis and click on "fix Checked".

Open Windows Explorer (Windows + E Keys ) and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\ and delete CHP.DLL

Reboot the Computer in normal mode, click the "AddReply" button top right and post a new log in this thread for further review and evaluation.

Can you tell me what this is please?

Hello Joe.
Success !!. Many thanks. I followed your directions and all 'favourites'
invaders have disappeared.
However, 2 ticked items (R0-NOT USED & 018- Filter hijack:) would not delete
with HJT. Also, I could not find CHP.DLL to delete.
You queried HJT SFX. I think that was just my mistake. hopefully deleted.
Here is my latest HJT Scan.

Hello Dunjon,

You've done extremely well for your first attempt and as you say many of the nasties appear to have gone.

I would like you to try removing these entries again with Hijackthis before we consider anything else. Can I draw your attention to the 06 entry below in case you overlooked it:

Open Hijackthis again, take another scan and place a checkmark next to these entries.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = NOT USED (OK)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = ftp=http:0;http=http:0
O18 - Filter hijack: application/octet-stream - {6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999} - C:\WINDOWS\CHP.DLL

What did you decide about this one?

The next line is a restriction. If you didn't set it yourself or have it set by a software program such as Spybot Search and Destroy then mark the check-box on the left. If you intentionally set the restriction, then leave it alone.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Reboot in safe mode again then open Windows Explorer and navigate to and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\CHP.DLL <<<---this file

If you can't find the CHP.dll run a search.

To do this go to Start | Search. Run the search and if it appears in the Windows folder highlight and delete it.

Reboot the Computer in normal mode, click the "AddReply" button top right and post a new log in this thread for further review and evaluation.

Hello Joe,
I can't find CHP.dll either in normal or safe mode.
I ran 'Find' in C:\WINDOWS\ etc and then every 'dll'
Over 2000 of these, but no CHP.dll.

These 2 items will not delete. The RO deletes after 'HJT Fix checked'and rescan, but reappears next reboot. O18 just stays put.
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = NOT USED (OK)
O18 - Filter hijack: application/octet-stream - 6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999} - C:\WINDOWS\CHP.DLL

This O6 item I did not knowingly set up, so I've deleted it.

Hello Dunjon,

You still have the remnants of a nasty infection on your Computer. This is what I'd like you to try in relation to the 018 entry:

Copy & paste the text in bold below into notepad and save it in Desktop as delfile.bat
(Set filetype to "All Files")

attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\chp.dll
del C:\WINDOWS\chp.dll

Close all programs and doubleclick delfile.bat

To see if the file chp.dll is on your C: Drive, do the following:
Click start->run-> type in 'cmd' (no quotes). Hit enter.
Type or paste in "dir C:\WINDOWS\chp.dll" (no quotes). Hit enter.
Tell me if any file is found.

*************
Then please go to http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and scroll down (the downloaded programs are in alphabetical order) to:

Registry Search Tool
Download, unzip and run RegSrch.vbs
Copy and paste this numerical string into the dialog box: 6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999

After a while a prompt will come up. Click OK to write the results to wordpad/notepad and post the log which is generated. (if there are any results)

Reboot the Computer.

**************
Go to Start | Run Type regedit in the slot and click OK

First backup the registry:

In the registry window that opens go to File and then export.

Follow the wizard and save your backup e.g. 'regbu' (without the quotes) in say MyDocuments.

Now navigate to:

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main:

In the right hand pane Highlight and delete the entry: SearchAssistant = NOT USED (OK) (If present, don't touch anything else.)

Reboot the Computer.

Open Hijackthis again, take another scan and place a checkmark next to these entries if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = NOT USED (OK)
O18 - Filter hijack: application/octet-stream - {6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999} - C:\WINDOWS\CHP.DLL

Reboot the Computer in normal mode, click the "AddReply" button top right and post a new log in this thread for further review and evaluation.

Hi Dunjon,

Please try this,

Unregister the chp.dll file:

Go to Start | Run

Type, or copy and paste, the following bold text into the slot:

regsvr32 /u "C:\WINDOWS\CHP.DLL" (without the quotes)

Click OK.

If a dialog box confirming this action appears, click OK.

Close all open Windows except Hijackthis and click on "fix Checked".

Reboot the Computer in normal mode, click the "AddReply" button top right and post a new log in this thread for further review and evaluation.

Joe.

Hello Dunjon,

Rerun RegSrch.vbs
Copy and paste this string into the dialog box: chp.dll
After a while a prompt will come up. Click OK to write the results to wordpad/notepad and post the log which is generated. (if there are any results)

Go to the command prompt by clicking Start --> Run --> "command" (Without the quotes)
To unregisiter the chp.dll file, type: regsvr32 -u chp.dll or regsvr32 /u chp.dll
Hit enter
Some type of message should be displayed that says you successfully unregistered the file
If you do not get this message, try using the filename and path in the command:
type: regsvr32 -u C:\windows\chp.dll or regsvr32 /u C:\windows\chp.dll
Hit enter

Now run the new CWShredder? I doubt it can remove this variant but just try this:
Please download the stand-alone version of CWShredder V2.1:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cw...nload.html
Double click the file CWSinstall.exe and install CWShredder
Double click CWShredder tor run it. Hit 'Fix'and allow it to fix everything it finds.

Once complete...run hijackthis again and check the 018 entry. Hit 'Fix checked'

Reboot and post a new log

Joe.
