Hi,

I posted this message originally in this forum but was moved to the "Am I infected?" forum. After being helped there, I was pointed back to this one since I now have some logs.

Here's a background. I originally posted the following message (it will help understand the original problems I was seeing):

"Hi,

My laptop appears to have been infected a couple of days back and has been giving a variety of problems. I have McAfee Anti-Virus Corporate Edition installed on my machine and it did detect a virus which it claimed to have cleaned.

However, soon after I started getting the "Windows Security Alert" messages (Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your ...". I downloaded and installed AVG Anti-Spyware on my laptop and ran a full scan. It detected 5-8 trojans/ infected files and claimed to have cleaned/ or deleted them.

However, things have only gotten worse since then. I see a variety of problems:

1. I can't run most programs - when I try to run something, it automatically gets killed. I can't even run AVG Anti-spyware anymore. I also downloaded HijackThis, but I can't install it because the minute I fire it up, it gets killed.

2. I can't see "Control Panel" in my "Start" Menu.

3. When I try to right-click on "My Computer" and click on "Properties", I get a message saying "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

4. Every now and then, I get a pop-up window saying something like "NT system has initiated a shutdown" and the system boots after a timer of 60 seconds expires. This only happens sometimes and I haven't been able to detect a pattern that would explain what makes it shutdown sometimes and not others.

I have been searching the web and found some solutions around resetting the Group Policy. I was able to do that and see the control panel yesterday, but today, I can't see it at all.

Also, when I reboot the machine and it comes back up, everything is reset - I don't have access to the registry and I can't see the control panel and I can't see "Properties" under "My Computer".

This forum really got my hopes up high and I wanted to get a HijackThis log, but as I mentioned, it won't run since it gets killed!

I can't run it in "Safe Mode" either.

Someone please help! I have way too much critical data on this system to even think of reinstalling the OS at this point.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center, SP2 on a Dell XPS m1210 and McAfee Viruscan Enterprise 7.0 updated to latest DAT files and virus signatures.

Thanks. "

-------------

Since I wasn't able to run HJT (it kept getting killed the minute I tried to click on the executable to install it) or pretty much anything else (from normal or safe mode), I tried Combofix based on someone's suggestion and thankfully it worked in Safe Mode. I was able to get a log. After running Combofix, I ran HJT and it ran successfully and I've been able to get a log!

Currently, my machine seems to be more stable. Here's the situation now:

1. I can see "Control Panel" now - I couldn't before I ran Combofix.
2. I can right-click on "My Computer" and then click on "Properties" successfully - I couldn't before I ran ComboFix.
3. I can run regedit - I couldn't before I ran ComboFix.
4. I'm not getting any more Windows Security Alert messages or the Spyware alert messages with the yellow triangle with an "!" in the lower right corner of my screen.

As such, things seem to be a lot more stable now.

However, I'm not sure if I'm completely disinfected or not. Also, I don't know if any "post-clean" steps or restores have to be done.

I'm posting the Combofix log, Combofix quarantine files and the HJT log here.

ComboFix log:
-----------------
Attached File  ComboFix.txt   22.04KB   22 downloads

ComboFix Quarantined files:
--------------------------------
Attached File  ComboFix_quarantined_files.txt   6.74KB   11 downloads

HJT log:
---------
Attached File  hijackthis.log   10.83KB   17 downloads

I appreciate your help!

Thanks!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Rajat Gupta
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

It appears you've no virus protection installed.
Download\install one of the following freeware options from the choice below.
Once installed update its definitions and then run a full system virus scan.

AVG7 Free Edition Antivirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup...ree_446a965.exe

Avast! 4 Home Edition:
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/

-------------------------------------------

Download and run Fixwareout from the link below:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
After the reboot post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt in your next reply.

-------------------------------------------

Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

Also post a new Hijackthis log.

*Note*
Please post all replies directly into this topic, not as attachments, thanks.

Hi RichieUK,

Please note that I *do* have anti-virus installed on my laptop (McAfee VirusScan Enterprise) - it shows up in both the combofix logs as well as the HJT logs that I posted earlier. So, I updated the definitions and ran a scan once again. It didn't show up anything.

Hi Ritchie,

I got rid of the files/folders you asked me to, removed older JRE and installed the latest version that you pointed me to.

Unfortunately, I don't know what "hrum.txt" is. I tried to delete it and was able to, however, a couple of seconds later, it regenerates itself! I tried multiple times.

Here's the latest HJT log:

Download KillBox,unzip/extract it to your desktop.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/spyware/KillBox.exe
Start up Killbox and place a check in 'Delete on Reboot'.
In the 'Full path of file to delete' box, copy and paste:

Allow it to reboot.
If it does'nt reboot automatically, reboot manually.

Question: In my previous post, ActiveScan has showed "nircmd.exe" as a "potentially unwanted tool". I googled it and it seems like it is a pretty powerful tool. I'm wondering if that's a remnant from the original attack to allow a hacker to run things on my machine? Should I be getting rid of it?

Thanks!

In my previous post, ActiveScan has showed "nircmd.exe" as a "potentially unwanted tool". I googled it and it seems like it is a pretty powerful tool. I'm wondering if that's a remnant from the original attack to allow a hacker to run things on my machine? Should I be getting rid of it?

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/NirCmd.A Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe
In this particular instance, nircmd.exe[NirCmd] is the freeware command-line utility thats installed and used by Combofix.
Its nothing to be concerned about.

Your log is clean
If all's ok,please do the following.

Find and delete:
fix.reg
C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe

* Click 'Start'.
* Open 'My Computer'.
* Select the 'Tools' menu and click 'Folder Options'.
* Select the 'View' tab.
* Under the 'Hidden files and folders' heading unselect 'Show hidden files and folders'.
* Re-check the 'Hide file extensions for known types' option.
* Re-check the 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)' option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
In the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Create a Restore Point' button, then click 'Next'.
In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.
