If you don't have a DVI monitor you will need a DVI to VGA adapter plug both monitors in and go into your display settings and select extend my desktop.

Edit: For Really cool features and advanced settings you can tryUltramon its a free trial for 30 days

right click on your desk top and select properties click on the tab all the way to the right ( settings ). To figure out which monitor is which click Identify numbers will apear on the screens corresponding to the numbers in the boxes. The number 1 is the primary and your task bar etc. will show up here. If its backwards and the task bar is on the wrong monitor you can switch the plugs on the video card or just click the desired primary monitor and check mark the box that says use this as my primary monitor.

Edit: by dragging the numbered boxes around you can change the orientation also. Such as if your second monitor is on the left you will want to have the number 2 on the left of the 1 that way when you drag and drop to the second monitor you drag items to the left of the screen

Try making sure both the monitors are plugged in and turned on, sometimes the computer is picky about detecting them.
