Alright ill get right to it. Been battling this problem for about 6 mnths now and have had very little luck ill start at the beginning. One day my optical drives started acting up, as in they wouldnt recognize any kind of media that was thrown at them even when trying to boot from the windows cd. I was told to try a new drive. So i went out and bought i brand new Sony DRU-830A. This drive does everything btw. Installed and it did the same thing. Bios would recognize the drive as would windows but still would not read any kind of media. At that point i did the following. Updated firmware, Replace ide cables, update all mobo drivers, tried different ide ports. etc. etc. etc... This was starting to frustrate me as this was not the only problems i was having and upon closer inspection of the mobo i have 14 capacitors that were leaking electrolyte. I knew right off that the culprit of the instability of my system was thes little buggers and hoped that the same would be true for my optical drives. So bought some new capacitors and replace the bad ones with the news. The instability issues have been solved. Compter is solid as a rock now. On top of that gave it a fresh install of windows completely wiped out both my hard drives. After windows was installed my new Sony dvd-ram drive now would read cd-roms cd-r and cd-rw. I put in a dvd and.... nothing. It was not recognizing that a disc was in the drive. So a improvment if nothing else. But the fact still remained that the drive would not read any media that was in dvd format. So i went through the usual steps. Updated bios again along with firmware. Installed the IDE drivers that came with mobo. Checked to make sure there were no conflicts, Uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. The same thing happened everytime. Took drive back got another one still did not work and just to be hopefull took that one back and got yet another one still did not work. The drive works fine in other computers. My computer is a bit of a older one but it has done me well some specs.

Do you have the drive running in Ultra DMA Mode or PIO4 Mode?

Have you insured that the drive jumpers are correctly installed? some mainboards just work better with optical drives if cable select is used, so try cable select, if you have not tried that yet. if you are using an 80 wire cable, make sure the blue connector is plugged into the mainboard.

Ya try the jumper thing. I had a similar problem. My DVD drive for some reason would not open no matter what, unless putting a paper clip into the whole. I try a few things and nothing worked. So I decided to go and switch my two optical drive jumpers from cable select to one being master and the other slave. Now they both open/close/operate fine!

If yours are set on cable select try putting them on master/slave, or if they are on master/slave do cable select. You should see the little jumper thing next to the ide cable plug in on the back of the drive. Hope this helps!

PURGE IT WITH FIRE!!!!

No seriously though, are you sure its not the drive, I know you went out and bought a new Sony, but could it have been some weird twist of fate that caused you to get a bad drive? Maybe try trading int he drive, one more time, and using completely different IDE cables. The only other basic solution I have for you is try a different power supply, I had a similar issue to this, (dvd burner was only reading cds), turned out it was a bad pws. If your not sure, try borrowing a friends.

I have been poking around at the idea of a bad PSU. I opened it up to see a few slightly swollen capacitors in there. I think i will try to find an old 20 pin that is still good and give it a go. Hopefully that will work.

So bought some new capacitors and replace the bad ones with the news

what about all the other components stressed by running with bad caps?

I have been poking around at the idea of a bad PSU.

buy a good one, they will work in new computers when you give up and decide to throw in the towel

All the other components are working fine after replacing the caps. I will not deny that undue stress might have been place on a few of the components but they are working better than they ever have. One question though do they still make 20 pin PSU?

On most 24 pin main connectors, you can detach the last four pins so it will work in a 20 pin mainboard.
The name says it all -- 59 and holding permanently

(Sorry, no time to read the rest of the topic, i might be blatantly wrong here)
Anything wrong with the 20+4 pin ones they make now? Or just a converter? I got one for .99 cents on newegg.

yeah but as OldFart said, almost all 24 pin connectors are really 20 + 4 pin connectors.

I don't know. You may say all the other components in your system are running better than ever... And I am one that truly supports fixing stuff yourself to save money, but I would not trust a motherboard that has such problems as leaking capacitors. It could happen again or there could be other not noticeable damage caused by that.
Before you do anything to waste time and money, I would suggest you try out the parts in other working computers to narrow down the problem.
I hope everything works if you get a new PSU if that is the problem.

Good luck.
