It appears I have a Trojan that is redirecting requests to DNS. Whenever I click on a result from a Google search it puts me on some type of phoney web site. I have tried several scanners, and the only one that could run all the way through was Stinger. Stinger did not find any infected files.

The other Virus Scanners either crash or lock up when they get to the directory (or a sub directory of):

C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files

There is only 1 subdirectory and it is Content.IE5. I have tried to delete Content.IE5 and Temporary Internet Files , but whenever I try Windows Explorer Crashes.

I was able to run Trend Micro's Housecall with the Temporary Internet Files Directory NOT Included. I got the following results

----------------From Housecall----------------------
Deleted TROJ_DNSCHNG.E
Trojan
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP1060\A0103399.exe
Deleted JAVA_BYTEVER.AY
Trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\37\19b63ba5-7cbcdc38
DeletedJAVA_BYTEVER.AY
Trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\crtdcghcn.jar-445c4b18-56928082.zip
------------------End Housecall------------------------------------------

It also included the following instructions

Restoring Modified Entries from the Registry
Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Control Panel>International
Still in the left panel, locate and delete the following entry:
Geo
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>
Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Winlogon
In the right panel, locate the entry:
System = "{5 RANDOM CHARACTERS}.exe"
Right-click on this entry and choose Modify. Delete the contents of the value data input box.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>
Services>Tcpip>Parameters
In the right panel, locate the entry:
DhcpNameServer = "85.255.116.146 85.255.112.196"
Right-click on this entry and choose Modify. Change the value of this entry to: DhcpNameServer = "{IP address of the affected system's DNS server}"
Again in the right panel, locate the entry:
NameServer = "85.255.116.146 85.255.112.196"
Right-click on this entry and choose Modify. Change the value of this entry to: NameServer = "{IP address of the affected system's DNS server}"
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>
Services>Tcpip>Parameters>Interfaces>{CLSID of network adaptor}
To determine the network adaptor's CLSID, open the Find dialog box by pressing CTRL+F.
In the Find dialog box, type
85.255.116.146 85.255.112.196
(NOTE: Make sure that only the data checkbox is selected, then click Find Next.)
Look for the result that returns the CLSID path of the network adapter in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet> Services>Tcpip>Parameters>Interfaces
In the right panel, locate the entry:
NameServer = "85.255.116.146,85.255.112.196"
Right-click on this entry and choose Modify. Change the value of this entry to: NameServer = "{IP address of the affected system's DNS server}"
Close Registry Editor.
Note: Please consult the network administrator to determine the IP address of the DNS server.
Uninstall the Fake Codec Program
To remove the fake codec program, simply use its uninstall option. To do this, perform the following steps:
Click Start>Settings>Control Panel.
Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
In the displayed list, locate the name of the fake codec program.
Click on Change/Remove.
Follow the instructions on the dialog box that appears.
Close the Add/Remove Programs window, and the Control
Running Trend Micro Antivirus
If you are currently running in safe mode, please restart your computer normally before performing the following solution.
Scan your computer with Trend Micro antivirus and delete files detected as TROJ_DNSCHNG.E and TROJ_ZLOB.FAP. To do this, Trend Micro customers must download the latest virus pattern file and scan their computers. Other Internet users can use HouseCall, the Trend Micro online threat scanner.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I followed the instructions for cleaning the registry, but I could not find any program to remove in Add/Remove Programs. The exe file identified in one of the first steps was kdtpr.exe. I could not find this program anywhere on the machine.

When I tried to run Housecall again, it locked up on the same subdirectory. When I examined the registry, most of the entries had been restored.

I have run HijackThis, and here is the log

Hello,

* Please download FixwareOut from the following site:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Hi,

Delete this file: C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdtpr.ren

The rest of your log looks OK again. Let me know in your next reply how things are now...

Hello,

I deleted the file, an everything seems to be fine.

I have one more question - if you don't mind -

I noticed the following entry in the hilackthis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCPitStopEraser] C:\Program Files\PCPitstop\Erase\PCPitStopErase.exe /remindme

I have no idea what this program is (or was) and the program and the directory do not exist. Would it be ok to have hijackthis fix this entry to delete it?

Thanks again for all your help.

Joseph

Hi,

That entry is related with the Related to PCPitStop_Eraser privacy scanner. But as you said, if the directory doesn't exist anymore, then you may check and fix that entry in HIjackThis. :thumbsup:

Glad I could help. :flowers:

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
