Hi all!

I am a perpetually jinxed laptop user who relies heavily on voodoo and the occasional stroke of luck to keep my equipment running. I travel constantly and my computer is my essential (and usually only) companion.

I have been using computers a long time, but I really don't like to watch the man behind the curtain work. Please go easy on me because my eyes start to cross if you get too technical (I'm not ditzy, just old).

My recent experiences with my computer sound like a MasterCard commercial:

- Technical assistance with your third attempt to install the *free* Sony Vista Business upgrade - $300
- Losing a month's work because your hard drive crashed - $5000
- Reactivating Windows for a new hard drive on the same computer - $59
- Small talk with tech assistants in Bangalore about Chicago weather while you wait for you computer to restart - priceless

Looking forward to learning and laughing.

Greetings, Molly!

Methinks we have a lot in common. I too have been on Earth a looong time, and I really miss my mind. There are lots of nice people here and we will keep you company. And lots of experts who share. You found a great site.

I was in comp-usa yesterday, and the sales guy said they offer a $35/month backup service. He was not sure about the price, but said it wasn't expensive. The data is stored offline. I was thinking that since your machine probably gets attacked by x-rays and thumps, that it's inclined to misbehave. If you do decide to look into backup service, make sure you find out about saving the "date saved" on your files. I got that service on verizon, and they overwrite MY date saved with their date saved. Also, if you decide to backup to cd or dvd, just make sure the disk isn't in the drive when your machine is doing a sweep... I lost a great backup like that... the scanner hammered the "0" partition to make it unreadable except by a software program called "badfile". I might just have to buy it to get my data back. Other problems I've had usiing backup programs is that if the hard drive gets hammered or you have to reload the operating system, you have also lost the restore point and would have to restore your files one by one. Gee this is a long "Hello". I'm a gemini, so you never know who you're going to get.

Happy trails!
:flowers: :trumpet: :inlove:   :) :P
