I am having three problems - more than likely related - that I can't solve.

The first is the constant pop up "System Alert! System has detected a number of spyware programs, etc."

The second is that I can't get the computer to boot up properly and it is getting worse! At first I had to shut down and start up 2-3 times before it would load up (it stops with the desktop showing and that's it and just sits there.) This last time I had to go through that process 6 times before it loaded up. I'm scared to shut the computer down now!

In that process, sometimes I get a message that says "The instruction at "Oxc918fea" refrenced memory at "OxOlc7cd85." The memory could not be written.

I have spent hours working on the computer. I have cleaned up the temp internet files, I have run AdAware, Spybot, Housecall, Stinger, updates and then the Hijack This. Here is the log:

In this panel click the Save list button.
Save the uninstall_list.txt file to your desktop and copy and paste the contents back in your next reply.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.exe
  • Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe

  • Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
  • In your next reply, please post the contents of rapport.txt.
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "Risk Tool". Its not a virus, but a program used to stop system precesses. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and malicious" use of the such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes. To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". See How to Boot in "SAFE MODE" tutorial if needed.
  • Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
  • Select 2 and hit Enter to delete the infected files

    Posted Image
  • You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace Infected file? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
  • A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
  • In your next reply, please include a fresh Hijackthis log and rapport log.

O.K. I teach at a college and this laptop belongs to the college, so I could have gone to the computing services people, but I think it would have taken a week or more. They were using Panda, but are going to something else next week, I think.

What we have done so far has taken off that stupid pop-up and the computer started up fine after the safe mode start. My question is this: In order to try and clean the machine I have put a number of programs on here. What would you suggest and what should I keep? I have:
AdAware
AVG
CCleaner
Hijack This
Norton Ghost (I don't know where this came from)
Panda Active Scan
Spybot.

Also, is there anything else that looked like I should get rid of?

Thanks a ton - a ton - for your help!!!

Rick

I would leave Hijackthis to the experts, you can uninstall AVG Anti-Virus. Norton Ghost is for backup purposes, i am sure its probably a trial. So, unless you plan on using it, i would uninstall it. The rest can stay. I really like AntiVir as a Anti-Virus program, the free version is great. However, doesn't come with email scanning and a few other options. The paid version is only $29.95, which is pretty inexpensive.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

===================================
Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

======================================

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  • Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  • If you don't have a Firewall installed, please choose from the following:
  • If you don't have a Anti-Virus installed, please download the following free program:
  • Here are two great Preventive programs:
    • SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
    • IESpyads adds a long list of bad sites to your Restricted sites in Internet Explorer and protects against drive by downloads.
  • Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
    • Red for Warning
    • Yellow for Use Caution
    • Green for Safe
    • Grey for Unknown
Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox
