My computer has been acting funny. Shutting off by itself, changing pages etc. so I ran AVG Anti Virus on it tonight and here are the results. I of course understand I have a Trojan horse but it says I can't clean it because it is embedded and I have no idea what the other 3 "changes" mean. If someone could help me to get my computer back n' running in good shape I would be very grateful. Thank you.

The AVG results:
C://Windows\system32\kernel32.dll Change Changed
C://Windows\system32\user32.dll Change Changed
C://Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Change Changed
C:\hp\bin\Python-2.2.1.exe\COMPARISONS.HTML Trojan horse PHP/MPack.B Infected, Imbedded object
C:\hp\bin\Python-2.2.1.exe Trojan horse PHP/MPack.B Infected, Archive

I am also running that Winpatrol n' this has been coming up...

Scotty has detected a change in a monitered file:
File Name: HOSTS
Change: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Allow this change?

Scotty has dectected a new start up program.
Start up program name UNKNOWN
Allow this change?

I have been rejecting both of these. I don't know what they are or if they have something to do with the Trojan too?

Here is my hijack log.....

Hello cherylisfun,

Sorry for the long delay, we are really swamped with logs right now.

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

C://Windows\system32\kernel32.dll Change Changed
C://Windows\system32\user32.dll Change Changed
C://Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Change Changed

This is nothing to worry about...

It is normal that AVG shows that files, the MBR or Boot record to have changed. These are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected.

To get AVG to quit showing them as changed, open the AVG Test Center, click the F3 key on your keyboard and tell it to accept the changes. If it still shows something as changed after this.. delete the file named AVG7QT.DAT in C:\ and AVG will rebuild it the next time it is run.
AVG is reporting that the files have changed since the last scan.

C:\hp\bin\Python-2.2.1.exe\COMPARISONS.HTML Trojan horse PHP/MPack.B Infected, Imbedded object
C:\hp\bin\Python-2.2.1.exe Trojan horse PHP/MPack.B Infected, Archive

If you quarentined the above files , then you have no problem.

*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

I am not seeing any malware in your log, just a few items to cleanup.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
(Description: HP monitoring tool. Unnecessary. Remove this to free up some system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan.
Click on I Agree.
Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner.

When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan".
Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

*******************************************

Lets check your HOSTS file.
It's located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
You can open it up in Notepad.
If it's just some lines on top with a # in front of it and followed by 127.0.0.1 localhost, then you don't need to post it;
however, if there are others following 127.0.0.1 localhost, you may have to fix it.
Post it here if that's the case.

*******************************************

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to the Desktop.
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Post the ComboFix log, the BitDefender log, and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi cherylisfun,

Lets try a different online scanner in place of BitDefener.

Please perform this online scan:

Kaspersky Webscan

This scan require Internet Explorer to run.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"

A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect.
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"

Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply and follow the the rest of the instructions in my previous post.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
* If you're downloading torrents in the background, please disconnect all of them.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

I was able to run the online scan and it found something, however everytime I try to save thereport the little box comes up asking where to save it BUT the box is blank and I can't type anything in like what to name it or any options for that matter. This is happening a lot. Like on the start menu when I click it, everything will be gone. I usually just restart the computer.
