Posted 22 July 2007 - 11:42 PM

I've read through all of the fixes, totally debugged my machine with McAfee Viruscan Enterprise and Stinger, run VundoFix, Smitfraudfix, Spybot S&D, AdAware SE, and the WinsockXPFfix. Then I did the repair/reinstall of WIE-7 from Microsoft's site. Still have two major probs. When I start IE, the system kind of locks up. Even though I have a working ethernet cable connection, Explorer will begin to fire up, then another IE will start to fire up, then the CPU usage goes to 100%, and I'm stuck until I kill the app with the task mgr (it's like it's still trying to throw off pop-ups, but can't do it). The other problem is, even though when I boot up now, I do get a valid IP address on my wireless connection, it's not really working. If I hit "repair", it comes back with a 169 IP address and gives me the "little or no connectivity" warning (I have turned the warning off, but it appears that I reall DO have little or no connectivity). I had a lot of Virtumondo infections, along with other spy/adware when I started this exercise, but at least I had a good wireless connection then (even though the browser was hijacked immediately and nearly useless). One other thing...when I boot up in safe mode with networking allowed...the browser (IE-7) works fine on the LAN connection, but the wireless connection still doesn't work.

Here is my HJT file, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance, Pat

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum wildtp
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Also post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi Richie, thanks for your help. I don't know if it makes any difference to the logs, but I have to boot this machine up in safe mode to get any internet connectivity. After running Combofix, it rebooted back to XP normal, and I ran the new HJT log.

Regards, Pat

(PS- I used to live in the UK in a small town in Surrey called Bagshot. Ever heard of it?)

Here is the Combofix log -

OK, performed all of the requested actions, nothing's changed. In Safe Mode, I've got a working Internet Explorer and Outlook Express on the LAN wire, but not on wireless. In normal mode, I've got e-mail only on the wire, but nothing on wireless (limited or no connectivity). I looked like Super AntiSpyware found some bugs, but the computer is still not networking well with others.

Regs, Pat

I can only get online on that computer by booting up in safe mode with networking (I'm using another computer to communicate with you right now). Is it OK if I do the scan while in safe mode?

Ok,do the following instead then please:

First make sure you're logged on to your pc as Administrator,or at least logged on using an account with administrators privileges.

Go here, download the Sysclean Package (3.1MB):
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern-dcs.asp

Go here, download the latest Virus Pattern File for Windows (lpt613.zip) (21.6MB):
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp

Now create a new folder on your desktop, rename it Sysclean.
Now place the Sysclean Package inside that new folder.
Unzip/extract the Virus Pattern File to that new folder.

Close all open applications, and DISABLE your current antivirus software.
Open the Sysclean folder and double-click on sysclean.com to start the scan.
It will take some time to complete.
Be patient and let it clean whatever it finds.
Exit when done.

Open your Sysclean folder then copy and paste the contents of sysclean.log in your next reply.
Also post a fresh Hijackthis log please.

OK, I'm running the sysclean scan now. I had already run the online Activescan at Panda, I can send that log as well as the Sysclean log when it's finished if you want. I couldn't find how to disable my antivirus software. I'm running McAfee Viruscan Enterprise. It doesn't appear in my systray or as a running process in the task mgr. when I'm logged on the Administrator account in safe mode. So I went ahead and started the Sysclean scan. I'll forward it along as soon as it's finished.

I'm watching the Sysclean run, and every line in the log appears to be ending with <<ERROR <-94>>>

Is the scan not proceding as it should because I didn't get the antivirus program shut down?

Still the same problem Richie. When I boot up normally, I come up with a valid IP address on my wireless connection, but I can't get e-mail or the browser to connect. When I try to repair the connection, it comes back limited or no connectivity. I'm getting no connectivity on the wireless connection. On the LAN wire, I can get e-mail but the browser does the same as on wireless (i.e. it basically locks up. When it's doing this, I pull up the task mgr., and it shows CPU usage at 100%. When I go down the running processes, iexplore has about 99%.) Otherwise, the machine seems to work fine, but this is the problem that I was trying to fix at the outset. Got any ideas?

I see you have McAfee installed,if you have McAfee Firewall disable it,then turn on the Windows Firewall in Control Panel/Security Center.
Restart your pc,let me know what happens.

----------------------------------------------------------

Run this online virus/spyware scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky WebScanner
Next click Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:
Select My Computer
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste the contents of that file into your next reply.
