Hello, I am trying to fix my ex-husbands computer, it's an HP with Windows Media Edition, he never backed up his files and only has a backup of his operating system on his infected computer. The symptoms are popups all the time (even with a popup blocker), it cannot boot into safemode at all, and it's hard drive says there is only 3% free space left, which I doubt is true because it's a 180 gb hard drive. It has scanned positive for Smitfraud core.sys. I can't even delete those files with killbox or edit the registry. Here is my Hijack This log. Please Help. I am stumped

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please include rapport.txt, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply. Please also let me know if you have disabled some programs from startup using MSConfig.
Thanks,
Charles

If you are pleased with the service I have offered, you may like to consider making a donation. Posted Image

Hi I actually think I fixed it using combofix. I had tried SmitfraudFix, early on and it didn't work. Glad to say though I can even boot into safe mode now and I haven't had one popup yet. . So far so good, if it seems to start again, I'll post another log. Otherwise I installed an up to date antivirus, 2 spyware programs and turned on his firewall. I'll also post a what not to do (look at on the internet) file on his desktop, so maybe he wont reinfect himself. This was one of the worst infections that I have seen. Thank you
Danelle

Here is my new hijackthis log, maybe you can double check it to see if I got it all

Yes, I had disabled a bunch of things using msconfig. His computer was too annoying otherwise.

Also, I just wanted to point out that in your instructions, you had told me to boot into safemode. Well the viruses disabled safemode and every other mode except for normal startup. I thought I would be smart (which was dumb) and go into msconfig to boot into safemode that way, so I could kill these things, well I ended up on a reboot loop. I had to start the computer from my xp disk, go to recovery, run a chkdsk /r, then rebuild the bootsector using bootcfg /rebuild. I finally got it to start back up into normal.

This is where I was when I posted here last night.

I read about combofix on this website in another post, I figured what could it hurt, so I downloaded it.
After running combofix in normal mode I could boot into safemode...I was shocked! And it somehow successfully deleted the files, that were being stubborn and would not delete any other way.
Kudos to whoever wrote that little program. Well I hope it's all gone. Let me know.
Now all I have to do is figure out if his hard drive is legitimately this full. It looks fairly legit though.
Thanks again...

Hello again,
There are just a few leftovers in your HijackThis log that need fixing.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2E9D4C81-9F27-4c14-B804-7B0F6BC88A4F} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: 0 - {567EA293-F8E1-4738-D1B2-5069364FC3BB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8A268F00-ED90-415A-8190-26097A57BAF3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbxyxxv - cbxyxxv.dll (file missing)

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

After that, I think we're done! You mentioned before a "what not to do" to prevent re-infection in the future, here are a few things that I recommend following which will definately decrease the likelihood of being infected again soon:

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
Either enable 'Automatic Updates' under Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates, or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.
Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.
