I have an IBM 300GL win98,its second hand got it recently when local university upgraded computers.Problem is the power switch does'nt work, its always "on" i have to unplug it to switch it off.Anyone have ideas if it was configured this way,are there any settings or programs i can check on computer, could they have removed the switch? i have'nt removed the cover yet, hoping for an easy fix before i go looking for screwdriver.

Go to Start>Settings>Control panel>Power Management. These are the settings that determine standy mode, etc. There is also a setting in the bios for Power Management.

I don't think that you will find this to be the cause though. I've never seen a machine that could not be turned off with the switch, unless the switch was broken.
