I was considering upgrading from XP to Vista two weeks ago so I downloaded Windows Easy transfer and used to it create a file of my settings and my documents which i saved to my external drive. I decided to stick with XP but a few days ado my registry got horribly corrupted and I decided to reformat. When I reinstalled XP I realized that in all my things I had backed up I did not do a my documents backup recently and i want to get the folder back. Is there any way I can extract it from the windows easy transfer file i have saved on my external? I can;t import it becuase you cant do an xp to xp import.. only xp to vista.

I am hoping to not have to install vista as the only way to recover my documents folder.

Actually, I believe that there's a way to use the User State Migration Tool to restore the settings and files to your XP PC - but am not familiar enough with the tool to describe how.

Here's a link that describes extracting information from the USMT files: http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic190327-1-1.aspx#bm190389
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
