I believe that my computer has some malware and I am posting this in the hopes that someone can help me clean it up.

I am running XP pro, version 2002, service pack 2. I use a Sygate personal Firewall, version 5.6, build 2808. I use Spybot Search & Destroy, which has been consistently coming up with 'no threats' (or any other alerts) lately. I also use Spyware Blaster. I suspect that they are all disabled.

Following the instructions on this site, I downloaded Ad-Aware SE. I encountered a problem when I tried to start it. Windows shut it down. The relevant information seems to be:

SZApp Name : aawservice.exe
SZAppVer7.0.1.5
SZModName:aawseice.exe

The error report referenced:

Temp\ WERde65.dir.00\aawservice.exe
Temp\WERde65.dir.00\appcompat.txt

I downloaded and ran STINGER.

Again, following the step-by-step instructions, I tried to manually update the latest security patches from Microsoft. I received error message :

0x80070020

I could not find this in their FAQs.

Tea,

Thanks for the response, despite the delay. I had to travel, so I switched off the PC, wiped it clean and have reinstalled the OS. I'm still not certain if I am out of the woods. I've posted a new thread & new HJT today - I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look.

James
